Guest BlackandBrindle
How long does a urine sample keep? I am going to take one in for Sadie hopefully tomorrow and my vet is about 45 minutes away. If I catch the sample, put it in a cooler with some cold packs, get dressed and go, will it be ok for like an hour to an hour and a half? I have a specimen cup and know how to do it. I suspect little miss has a UTI.
Burpdog
Maybe if it's kept cool. You may see crystals in the urinalysis. Quote Diane & The Senior Gang Burpdog Biscuits
Guest Energy11
The FRESHER the urine the better. If you can get it right before you leave for the vets, OR, BETTER YET ... they ALL seem to want to pee when they smell the other puppers ... so, maybe you can get it at the vets? Good Luck! MINE will always pee when they get out of the van at the vets, so I bring my specimin cup along! Good Luck!
Guest mountain4greys
I second trying at the vets. All mine go there.
Guest BlackandBrindle
Does it matter if it's not the first catch of the day? Because I was thinking of bringing her along and doing it in the parking lot...
rschultz
My vet always says you need the first catch. He tells me to keep it in the fridge till I come in and to my surprise no one thought it was lemonade..lol Quote Lexie is gone but not forgotten.💜
Guest Energy11
My vet says it is okay to get it there, ALTHOUGH, if he/she wants the first one of the day, you can catch it, and refrigerate it, and as the others have said, LABEL IT! "))))))) I buy baby food and give them the contents, usually sweet potatoes, and wash/bleach them out well. Then, I wash out/bleach out, a shallow bowl, and they pee in IT, and I transfer to the baby food jar. Works everytime!
Guest BlackandBrindle
I have a specimen cup. Sadie's pretty easy to get a sample from without getting peed on.
Batmom
You want the first-of-the-day catch if you're needing to check specific gravity (for example, if you expect kidney issues). If for a possible UTI, it doesn't matter so much; you just want to catch her before she's really tanked up on water. If she doesn't tank up, doesn't matter. Midstream catch is best. Refrigeration is fine if you're just checking for a UTI. Fresh sample lets you check for *real* crystals tho. Guest BlackandBrindle
She doesn't really tank up on water and I am just looking for UTI at this point. She's just a little off. She peed in the house and Spud will not leave her butt alone. It could just be that we've had a lot of visitors (Amanada' crew and now foster Trolly) and she's a little put out but I want to make sure she's feeling all right... KF_in_Georgia
I'm a belt-and-suspenders type, myself. Do both. Do first catch, give her something to drink, take her with you with a spare cup, and grab a sample in the parking lot. Then let the vet choose which to test. macoduck
I brought in fresh urine that was well chilled (not frozen) and the techs had to have it room temp to run the tests. Batmom
Doesn't take very long for it to get to room temp, tho. You only need a bit for the test. If they leave the whole cup sitting there waiting to warm up ... they're not very bright . You have to fridge it so it doesn't grow extra things.
