Guest greytlady
Al was originally adopted from Greyhound Friends of NC. His family moved to Roanoke and divorced. The wife didn't want him and the husband worked on the road and wasn't home to care for him so I was asked if I would take him. His adopter met me as we were doing Christmas pictures on Apperson. Hope offered to foster him and thoroughly enjoyed having him around but found what we thought was the perfect home for him. Al enjoyed his new home and Hope got to babysit every now and then. Al was about 10 when I got him and he spent a year or two with his new family then was returned when he could no longer manage their steps. I had him checked out at the vets, started on pain meds and sent him to reside with Joann where he wouldn't have to do any steps. He ended up coming back to the kennel last year and I think he has had a ball here. Anyone that came to the kennel was here to meet him. He loves everyone and his favorite thing was to stalk you when you picked up poo in the turnout. The purpose of his stalking was so he could pee on your bucket. The joy and devilish gleam in his eye when his mission was accomplished was infectious. You couldn't be mad at him, it was all in fun. Food is another of his favorite things. Anything and everything edible is ok by him. Fig newtons, yogurt, brownies, stew, cheese, what ever I was eating and regular doggie treats were inhaled and appreciated. He learned to come stand in front of me and stare deeply into my eyes. FEED ME.... FEED ME! Of course I did, LOL! I fuss at others for letting their dogs teach them to give them treats, but Al had me deeply under his spell. He could be rooms away and hear the fridge door open. By the time I closed it, there he was on the other side of it waiting for a brownie or piece of cheese. He has his own way of doing things and come hell or high water they will be done his way. It is hard to see him struggle to stay standing while he eats dinner, but laying down and eating isn't done in his mind. He gets lost occasionaly and getting him inside is always a treat. For whatever reason, all my senior boys have to be invited in or out the door. He would stand by the door and I would have to ask him if he wanted out. Why, yes he would, and out the door he would go. Coming in was sometimes like waving in an airplane. He will stand at the door, just looking at it. Asking him if he wanted in would just register a curious look. I would have to open the door up wide and wave him in. The light bulb would come on and in the door he would come. I love to watch him on a good day, skipping across the deck to the turnout. I love to see his little ears all perked up when he is paying attention to something, usually food! I love his little boy face, gone silver with time. I love to see him relaxing on the deck in the sun. I love to see him all curled up in his favorite bed . I love to see him get all jiggy with the kennel dogs when supper is coming. Teeth bared and barking like a bad man! I love his little dinner dance and the way he inhales his food without even chewing. I love the softness of his brindle coat and the way he likes to snuggle in a soft blanket when he gets cold. I love the way he raises his paw so I can get to that spot on his chest he likes to have rubbed. I love to see his eyes light up when a favorite person comes to see him or a goodie is coming his way. I'll remember him on his birthday, May 12th when he would have been 15 years old. Every day with Al has been a lesson in love and tolerance and how a good ole fashioned "gotcha" can make you smile. I love him enough to cradle his head and cover him with kisses as I let him go.

Guest greytlady
He has gotten visits from his favorite "Aunties" bearing gifts of ice cream and cheeseburgers and fries. I don't know whether it is easier to make arrangements for his final journey or to have him make his own arrangements. GreyPoopon
I'm so sorry. He had too many homes, but he seems to have found his spot near the end. I hope the end is peaceful.
