My vet prescribed Deramaxx and Tramadol for Butch, who was diagnosed with Osteo last week.

I was reading this thread and see that Metacam/Meloxicam is also prescribed:

Is Metacam/Meloxicam commonly prescribed for osteo? Are there other pain meds that are commonly prescribed?

My girl was on metacam, tramadol, gabapentin, pepcid & carafate. I tried artemisinin but it made her stop eating. She seems to have been the exception for that however.

Best wishes & good thoughts to you & Butch.

We are in the same place as you are right now too with our girlie Lulu. We are on our third pain med combo in as many weeks, and so far found Deramaxx/Tramadol to be the best combo to date. We did Rimadyl/Tramadol combo which did not work. Then we went to Dexamethasone (steroid)/Tramadol combo which was worse the the first combo and set us back by several days. Finally we are now on the Deramaxx/Tramadol combo, with room to move to a stronger dose of Tramadol if necessary.

I do not want to see our girlie go backwards again with pain to see if something else will work. What we have now is doing the trick so far, and I will stay the course with this current combo for as long as it is working for her. We did not move to metacam/meloxicam as the vet felt that if Rimadyl did not work, we would not have a much better chance with a Metacam/Tramadol combo. I was also not willing to wait another week to see if that was true or not...we just needed to get ahead of the pain before we could control it for her.

The Deramaxx is going to break me financially, but this is our girlie, and we will do whatever it takes to keep her comfortable during this awful journey. I just got Deramaxx from Drs. Foster & Smith for $2.18 per 100mg tab. See my thread about vets and willingness to work with you with regards to online meds.

Spoil your baby like crazy. This is an awful jorney to be on, the hardest I have ever been on with any of my dogs so far, and it's just tearing me apart. As hard as it is, stay upbeat around your pup too. It will only help keep his spirits positive. I show Lulu my happy happy face and voice, then hide in the bathroom and cry my eyes out!

Metacam is simply one of the NSAIDS. I used it for Jack along with Tramadol for his osteo. He tolerated very well and it worked in combination exceptionally well. Jack did not have amp and chemo.

With my hounds that have had OS, I've used a combination of an NSAID (either Deramaxx, Metacam or Rimadyl) with Tramadol, depending upon what was tolerated best. Find out the upper limits of what you can give Butch, so he can stay as comfortable as possible. Sending prayers and light his way. :hope

He was prescribed 37.5 mg of Deramaxx once per day and 50 mg of Tramadol twice per day.

I was wondering about the Metacam because they said, in the Merlin thread, that it has been shown to slow the progression of some forms of Osteo, so I wanted to know if he should definitely be on that.

Yes, there is some evidence for using Metacam to slow the progression of some forms of OS. However, it really depends upon what medication your hound can tolerate. I don't believe that there's a definite way of knowing what form of OS is active in a living dog via x-ray data. One can tell by how rapidly the tumor grows. I've only dealt with the aggressive form. :(

Alex was on Rimadyl and Tramadol until that was no longer controlling the pain, and then we added Neurotin (Gabapentin). You may also have room to increase the Tramadol. Usually the first prescribing dose is pretty low.

I'm where you are with my Lewis...he's on Tramadol (100MG twice a day) and Meloxicam (half a 7.5MG tab once a day) right now and doing well.
