Vaccine Recommendations/time-line

Indigo is due for her check-up. (She will be 9 years old in June.) We switched vets for Max, last spring, and plan on taking Indi to the new guy. He is older (mid-60s) and has been in practice for many years.

Maximilian went to this vet last May. Dr. did an exam, stool check, collected blood for the HW test, expressed his anal glands and hand-scaled his teeth. He vaccinated him for Bordetella and also gave him "DHLP-PV - Canine". (I think this is a multi-vaccine?) Reminders on Max's paperwork say all things will be repeated each year. He is not due for Rabies until 2010...dr does 3 year.

(Just a side note: all of this only cost $112.90)

We occasionally go to Meet-n-Greets. The hounds walk around our neighborhood and sniff all manner of pee-mail. We occasionally have other dogs visit.

What vaccines are really necessary? How often?

Just looking for some opinions. Hoping the vet member weighs in, too.

Thanks!

Every 3 years and after age 9 or so, it depends is my opinion :D

Thread on Vaccines

Printed out pages 4-8. Plan on taking them to the vet with me.

Rabies is obviously necessary every 3 years, by law.

Core vaccines listed:

Parvovirus

Distemper

Adenovirus-2

Those seem to be necessary...yes?

Non-core vaccines listed:

Parainfluenza

Bordetella

Leptospira interrogans

Do you vaccinate for the non-core ones?

3 yrs for rabies, and I do not vaccinate my dogs for anything else after 2 yrs old. I do not

think a 9 yr old dog needs this vaccines anymore just Rabies and only because that is the

law

Ditto.

I think a dog being out & about in the world, instead of just the backyard, is building immunity to disease. The core vaccines listed are for what I consider puppy diseases. If your dog has been vaccinated multiple times for them & is an adult, I think the risk of not vaccinating is very low.

If you live in an area where lepto is prevalent, that one is a yearly vaccine. Others are 3 year, as Burpdog noted. Bordatella is given every 6 months at my vet's office.

At nine years of age, if she has been vaccinated every previous year, chances are she is still protected for quite some time (even though they say give vax every year) We do 3 year rabies at the clinic I work for- The distemper vaccine (da2pl/cpv/cv) Is very important- I would def vaccinate every year for this despite the age of the hound. Bordetella is important too but every two years is sufficiant.

Thread on Vaccines

:nod Especially after talking with the specialist that treated Harmony about vaccinations. He agreed we way over-vaccinate dogs in this country and said he recommends every 3 years and rabies as required by law. Vaccinations have been linked to IMHA because they put a load on the immune system (though Harmony was 2 years into her vaccination schedule so it wasn't the case with her).

We do lepto every year -- lot of it around here, and we live on the edge of a natural area with lots of animals traversing our yard.

We do bordetella (kennel cough) every if we're going out and about among other dogs.

Everything else we usually do 3 year.

We do DHPP every three years at our vet hospital. Lepto is given to at risk dogs on a yearly basis. Lyme and bordetella are given yearly to at risk dogs. Rabies is done every three years. We will never give all the vaccines on the same day! There is talk in the veterinary field of going to every 5 years with the dhpp...it remains to be seen what the AVMA and AAHA will recommend. Puppy shots have to be timed appropriately for adequate coverage...if you have a hound with a sketchy background (unknown vaccination status) I think it's a lot safer to booster the DHPP a year later and then perhaps go to the 3 year protocol. I can't tell you how awful it is to see any dog infected with distemper or parvo virus let alone a whole kennel of them (and not all of them were puppies!) Personally, I've seen it and I feel it is worth protecting against. Obviously, if your hound is not feeling 100 %, or has medical problems such as immune mediated disease, cancer, renl failure, etc. you should postpone the vaccines.

In the latest edition of Care of the Racing & Retired Greyhound, there is a statement that reads "In addition, the current Bordetella vaccine was developed many years ago and does not provide reliable protection against current strains of Bordetella that cause disease today."

Any virus can mutate in order to become more opportunistic, but should we vaccinate "just in case" and hope that a stimulated immune system will react appropriately? Since the big C is a disease of the immune system, will an immune system that is busy reacting to vaccinations fail to respond correctly to the formation of cancer cells?

Is there a statistically predictable number of dogs that will succumb to these diseases regardless of vaccination status?

It's early and my mind is wandering, but these are the questions that drive me crazy. I realize that there are no guarantees, and everyone should work with their Vet to make the best decisions for their own circumstances, but are there any resources that provide statistics of disease prevalence by county, state or region?

At nine I would only give lepto (if I lived in a high risk are -- like here) in addition to rabies as required by law. Unlike the others in DHLPP lepto really does only provide protection (though partial) for a year. My vet thinks bordatella is pretty much vastly overrated and doesn't push except in boarding situations where you have to have it.

I went to 3 year on DHPP eight years ago after my first grey died of Immune Medited Hemolytic Anemia shortly after her shots. A vet on another board recommended it and the more homwork I did the more every 3 years made sense. It is now pretty much the norm here. I'd say out of 50 or so vet clinics we call from work for vaccination updates only about 5 still push yearly DHLPP for older dogs with proven vaccination history.

I plan to definitely tell my vet that I want to vaccinate every 3 years.

Which vaccines are crucial? We live in SW Ohio. Ticks are not a problem, at all.
