Newgreymom
Dylan and Daisy got into their first fight after 5 years on Friday. She has about 15 stitches and the vet put her on Cephelaxin 500mg twice a day for 7 days. Is 7 days enough on the antibiotic?
RobinM
If that's what the vet said and gave you, I would presume it was just fine! Newgreymom
Forgot to add that we just moved to Grand Rapids, MI 7 days ago, and I didn't know this vet at all. I just thought a "normal" dose of antibiotics is usually 14 days.
TheFullHouse
Normally it's 7 to 10 days. Guest EmilyAnne
Henry recently finished a ten day round of Cephalexin for a self amputated dewclaw that was in early stage of infection.
Batmom
How long depends on what it's for. Is it a relatively shallow wound? Your vet probably expects it to be mostly healed in 7 days. Sorry to hear about the fight and hope it is a one-time thing for your pups. fourofem
Lewis is working through a 10 day round for his paw pads. I think 7-10 days is pretty normal. Scooby172
I'm sure 7 days will be fine. My galgo is on 6 weeks of 2 antibiotics for pneumonia, I think it depends on what they are treating. Good luck Linda, Valor, Keeva and Bella

Guest greyvettech
It sounds long enough, as it is to prevent infection, not really treating an infection- There are much better anti-biotics out there though..Maybe Cephalexin is just his ab of choice.... duncan41
Oh, that's not the way to start out in a new location. The stress of the move much have disturbed the karma in your household. Hope things get back to normal soon. Question for all: Does Cephalexin have the same reputation of killing the good intestinal bacteria in dogs as it has in humans? My mother's quack dentist prescribed it for the remote chance of an oral infection about 10 years ago and it killed all the good bacteria in her intestinal tract. Since she moved in with me, I have her on probiotics and Metamucil and she's much, much better. Guest FullMetalFrank
I think the few times we've used it here, it has been for 7 days (once for a ripped dew claw, another time for stitches.)
