I Am At A Loss

So we have been weening Conner off the medicam and slowly he has been getting sorer and sorer. We are on the 15kg dose now. We actually went out to the greyhound run this morning and he seemed just fine. His girlfriend was there and he just kept chasing after her.

Well since we have been home he has been crying off and on. He was laying on my bed, raised his head and started crying like the GSOD. Later on Conner was laying on his bed beside my bed and Kool Aid made himself comfortable beside him and put his head on Conners' back side and another GSOD. We have had many little cries in between all this. When he gets up his back is almost U shaped, and he is walking so gingerly.

I just don;t get it, he was fine this morning, he was happier than a pig in ** with his girlfriend and now he can barely move again. I am very sad, very frustrated. :headwall

Oh Conner, Wayne does not like hearing that you are not feeling well. Can you just keep him on the Metacam? If he's more comfortable on it why not? We're thinking about him!

Amanda has he been to chiro or acupuncture yet? Maybe the activity today irrtated something and with the decrease in the metacam it's out of control.

We have not been to a chiro or acupunture yet, The doc had said to ween him off over about a month and then do more tests as the specialist thinks its more a spine disease. I can't remember the name of it. But I am calling her first thing in the morning to ask if I can just keep him on the 35kg dose well doing tests.

The chirco will be brought up tommorrow and I will get him in to see if that helps at all.

Thanks everyone.

I don't understand. If he has been getting sorer and sorer as you have been weaning him off his meds why would you take him for a run??

Hounds just don't know any better, they will run even if they are sore.

If his back is now in a U shape I wouldn't mess around and I would get him to a vet ASAP.

There is something called Pinching your back. It's a racing term and it's not something to mess around with.

Often hounds in kennels that this happens to have to be placed on IV fluids, muscle relaxants and crate rest.

I'm not trying to scare you but it's not something to mess around with. These hounds are tough and if they are screaming in pain there is something wrong.

Also a hound that has been resting and not much activity for a month or more can strain themselves very easily.

Well he had cried only a few times through out the month, and he never usually runs. But yesterday I decided to get him out for some fresh air and he went running and trotting.

Well we wont be doing that for some time now.

I do not have any advice either and am certainly not going to question anything that you have done. I am just sending healing thoughts and prayers your way.

So Conner's doc is not in till Wednesday, possibly Thursday so I talked to the other doc who gave me more medicam and she said that there is no harm keeping him on what is comfortable for him. So He got a 35kg dose and he is on complete bed rest until we schedule more tests and find out whats wrong. I am tired of waiting, it's always a waiting game :headwall

Well hopefully we can get the right tests done and we can fix this quickly.

Turbo had been on Meticam ($$$) for a couple years, then recently a generic Meloxicam came out and our vet switched him to it.

He only took half a 7.5 mg tablet once a day and I could get a 90 day supply at Target for $10 and it worked! I take Meloxicam myself for my knees. :colgate

I'm so sorry Connor is having trouble again. Definately bring up Chiro/acupuncture. Even while he is on the metacam (and keeping him on it for the rest of his life is an option, medically wise), he could get chiro/acupuncture treatments and they may even help him get of the metacam or maybe get to a lower maintenance dose. Chiro can help amazingly, and someone who knows what there doing can work with the other courses of treatment...If your vet does not know any vets who do chiro, don't be afraid to call human chiros - some will work on and have training in animals as well.

Good luck, it can be a tough journey trying to figure out what is wrong with our babies...
