Veterinary Opthamologist Referral Needed

Recommended Posts

I think Carl has Pannus, God knows I hope I'm wrong.

Does anyone know of a reasonably priced (stop choking) animal opthamologist here in the Los Angeles area? I'm going to call our regular vet to see if he has any experience with this, if so that would be helpful, but I'm guessing he'll refer us to a specialist.

I'm just guessing but I would think your regular vet can handle this. I know of quite a few Greys with it and all were treated by their regular vet. Usually it's treated with cyclosporine and prednisolone.

We had a Papillon who developed pannus.

Her gp diagnosed and treated her.

It was not as bad as I imagined it would be.

Hang in there.

Thanks so much. I've read as much as I could find here and on the internet about it. If I am understanding it correctly it seems like it's controllable, even over the lifetime of the dog. Is that true or am I fooling myself?

My Alan was diagnosed with pannus several years ago. He's doing fine with medication - eye drops once a day. But the medication is life long.

How did you notice it in Alan? When you started treatment did they have to inject the corneas or did they just begin with the drops?

Very controllable - Mara has it and gets cyclosporine drops 2 times a day. If I remember correctly, it was diagnosed when she went in for a scratch on her eye. Her vet did refer Ryan to an ophthalmologist for a definitive diagnosis and treatment.

Your vet will probably have at least one that he/she can refer you to. A general vet can usually diagnose and treat, though I would want a referral to the specialist to at least confirm the diagnosis. Eyes are one thing that it's worth having the expertise double check your vet's initial diagnosis.

Dr. Brinkis at th Eye Clinic for Animals is the only place I would go. Here's their # 949.733.8271

They're off Jamboree Rd, I think in Tustin. I'm not sure if it's the same one that BrandyzMommy is talking about.

I called my vet this morning, he's out and will be back tomorrow. I'll check in with him tomorrow.

Thanks for the referrals, I'm going to start calling around.

Now for a moment of wallowing in self pity, it's hard to believe lightening could strike 3 times in one household in such a short period of time.

Jan. '07, Sheila was diagnosed with SARDS and lost her sight permanently within 4 hours.

July '07, Kobie ran away, was sighted 2 times and never again (we even had blood hounds out looking for him)

June '08, now this with Carl

Hopefully, I'm getting ahead of myself, it might be nothing, but it has developed like and looks exactly like the images of Pannus.

We have an appointment for 9 tomorrow morning. He's a good vet and really seems to know greyhounds. I'm hoping that he'll be able to start treatment immediately rather than sending us to a specialist - in my paranoia over this it seems like I can see more of the filmy white creeping into Carl's corneas every day.

I've got lots of anxiety over this. :(

We'll be thinking of you - with what you've gone through this past year, I'm sure you must be very apprehensive about this. But even if it is pannus, he'll be just fine. Mara says so :)
