Orion Hurt Himself

Recommended Posts

Sending prayers for a swift recovery. :grouphug Edited to add: Can you put some rubber back throws on the hardwood floors? Feel better soon sweetheart. :grouphug

Yup, we're working on that right now. The vet feels that we need to have them down at least until after he heals. It's just hard with the way our house is, the hallways, bathroom, kitchen are all hardwood, only the rooms are carpeted ( 3 bedrooms, livingroom, stairs and entire basement) We'll have at least a dozen rugs :lol

We're back. The diagnosis is a pulled or stretched nerve. His leg has normal responses, normal pain sensation, normal range of motion and it can support his weight when it's righted.

He's on strict orders to be leashed to potty, no walks for now until we see an improvement. He was given an antiflammatory injection and sent home with prednisone.

If we don't see any improvement within the next few days, I have to call them back and ask for a referral to a neurologist. But the vet was pretty confident that the pred would do the trick.

When Jim did the splits on vinyl flooring, it took a vet school visit to get a diagnosis. He wasn't knuckling, but he had a very severe limp. Turned out he had torn his tensor fascia lata (a hip abductor muscle), and the specialist who dxd him said he only ever saw that in greyhounds. He said there was an op they could do but it only had a 50% success rate and that with or without it, he'd probably always limp. After about six months of careful exercise management, the limp did go, more or less, but came back again as he got old.

Hopefully, Orion has something similar and not too serious. Good luck with the pred - but I'd most definitely keep non-slip rugs down, and see the neuro if it doesn't improve.

Jack does the splits occasionally, despite the rugs. I think the older ones are very vulnerable as far as that goes - not that I know how old Orion is. :P

Thanks everyone. I think your happy thoughts and prayers are working.

This morning I took him out for his potty and he only knuckled 3 times. A far cry from yesterday morning where I was having to help him right the foot multiple times. He seems to be able to move a bit better on the floors.

Thanks for the advice Silverfish. I'll definitely keep that in mind too. Though he's not in pain and he's not limping (per se), it's more like he swings the leg wide when he takes a step to avoid knuckling it.

Continuing to pray for healing.

OH boy I hear you. We had pergot flooring put in the kitchen and only the kitchen thank goodness and it looks lovely...however...we all did the splits including me when I had footies on. So we now have pretty much covered the kitchen with one large area rug...1 runner...and 3 small ones...Basically covered the whole kitchen floor with carpet. I had carpet in the kitchen before the new flooring and hated it! :lol:lol:lol:lol

Hug and kiss that baby for me...:grouphug

Well, my buddy is making headway! After a restful weekend (and two prednisone related piddles), he's starting to walk and look normal again. He's managing the three stairs out of and into our house without issue. When you knuckle his foot, you can see the muscles trying to right it, and then he does (a far cry from last Thursday, when his foot would just sit there like a limp noodle).
