Fudge Posted March 23, 2008 Share Posted March 23, 2008 (edited) I'm working tonight...I just ran home to let the girls out and sweet Hopie seemed like she was blind She couldn't see what side of the door to go outside and when I handed her a treat she went for it a foot away and then ran over to Zoe looking for her treat while I was still standing there going here Hopie I'm back at work now.....I'm the only one here tonight......I've asked a friend to go to the house to check on her....oh, I wish I could leave here and be with her \ Several weeks ago I started gating off the stairs cause she has had a few spills. She's 13 1/2. She has a vet appointment on Tuesday to get chest xrays because she is panting to much but not all the time. She was hopping around though seemed fine and happy but I'm pretty sure she can't see! Thanks for listening. It ends within a few hours and he goes back to normal. I don't know what other kinds of things cause that. Your vet will know. I know the worrying feeling of having to leave your hound who may not be feeling well. Hopie is very likely resting comfortably while you work. p.s. I didnt mean to say I think Hopie had a grand mal. I really dont think that is what it is. She did seem disoriented but perked up. My BF just called to let me know she is content, not stressed, resting in her bed. Billy gets like that after he has a seizure too (although his are not grand mals like Henry has). Billy goes back to his normal self after a few hours. Henry runs 45 miles an hour in a complete panic, banging into things very hard, there is feces smeared where grand mal took place, and urine sprayed around the area. That's why I don't think Hopie had a grand mal. If she had a grand mal bad enough to cause this sort of 'blindness', she'd have other very obvious signs of grand mal too. When you went home to let Hopie out, had she been in a fairly dark room? I have heard of something called 'night blindness' which I think is where they just dont see right away when going from dark to light? I have noticed some "night blindness" this past year....we take a flash light for her and me when we walk at night but we were in a well lit room tonight. I have 120 minutes to go until I will be home and can check on her again. I don't think any kind of big seizure was involved...no mess, not stressed. Fudge Posted March 23, 2008 Author Share Posted March 23, 2008 Last night when I FINALLY got home from work....I spent mucho time with Hopie. It appears that she is barely if at all seeing out of her right eye. She got lots of gentle rubs and scritches last night. Hopie ate well, went to the the on-leash park and walked with Zoe and three other greys and there humans. She was very spunky but I kept noticing her cutting it close to a few objects on her right side. Last night there was no reflex if I touched under her right eye but outside this morning there was reflex. Maybe she has REALLY REALLY bad night blindness. I'm not letting her go up and down the stairs without me. I'm gonna FYI the vet Monday for Tuesday's appointment. THANKS! Fudge Posted March 24, 2008 Author Share Posted March 24, 2008 We are anxiously waiting for Hopie's appointment tomorrow....it has been VERY sunny here in Pennsylvania yesterday and today and see seems less confused outside. Last night I put brighter lights in the kitchen and the living room and she seemed less disoriented. She still is not seeing anything from her right eye, I've tried a flashlight in her eye and pupil does nothing. The opthamologist said he can probably see vague shapes and light/dark spaces but for all intents and purposes he's blind. Our other girl, Hanna, is blind from PRA at 6 years old. Both dogs really manage quite well and you'd usually never be able to tell they had vision problems. I think it's a lot harder on the humans...I've just learned to use my voice a lot to help guide them. Grandpa has most of his issues with going through doorways - esp inside to outside and vice versa. We just open the door as wide as possible and he takes a running start at it. The vet checked Hope's eyes, said they look like a usual older dogs eyes would, no cataracts The panting, no fluid sounds in her lungs, heart sounds good. As for arthritis, we may try Tramadol after we get bloodwork results and nix the Deramax (since that is what I think brought on the panting symptoms). Back to the eyes, he wants to see the bloodwork results to see if anything is going on there that would effect her eyes Diabetes?! Thyroid?!
