kolarik1
sorry, the post didn't turn out as wel as it was typed. The first # is his results, the second # is the range. According to the panel, he had 2 that were low, which I wrote the word 'low' next to them Quote Marble, Noah, Eden, Raya (red heeler), Cooper & Trooper (naughty kittens) Missing my bridge angels: Pop, Zelda, Mousey & Carmel
Batmom
What condition is he on antibiotics for? If he has symptoms that point distinctly to hypothyroidism, meds might be worth a try. But from the test results, he isn't clearly hypothyroid (see the link posted above for discussion of different measures). Only the T4s are off, and that can happen for a variety of reasons. Well, of course they are. That's what the meds do. The original numbers don't indicate that she was unequivocally hypothyroid to begin with, tho. As MSU and OSU and others have studied and documented, there's a lot of evidence that T4 for greyhounds can be so low as to be unmeasurable ... and yet perfectly normal. First time around on meds there was no change as the doage was too low and her symtoms were text book. Her labs were done at MSU both times. My vet and the vets at MSU suggested the small increase and sure enough, it made the difference in both the numbers and symtoms. kolarik1
ok, so the vet called today as we had pop retested and spoke to b/f and told him that he tested at 8 and the range is 50 - 64 and wanted to make sure that we were giving the pill!!! (yes we are, we make sure all of his pills go down, no matter what)...my question is, my friend is on it for herself and she is suppose to take the meds about 1 hour before eating, whereas for dogs it says to either give with or without food... So, does soloxine work if you give it with food? Does anyone know? We've been giving it to Pop after he eats his breakfast/evening meals with his antibiotics and benadryl...the vet said he wasn't on enough food to cause interactions among the drugs. feemandvm
Those are normal Greyhound levels unless you have overwhelming evidence of hypothyroidism. kolarik1
he was sluggish, more than you would expect from a grey, has been having skin issues, which we're trying to figure out, mainly infections either bacterial or yeast...once he started on the soloxine, his energy did pick up, but his values apparently haven't, which is why I'm asking. Guest greytexplorer
kolarik1, I don't think it matters if you give the meds with or without food. But, when my vet wants to do a blood check, I am instructed to give the meds in the am, and come to the clinic for blood draw EXACTLY 8 hours later. I think it's the timing between dosing and drawing that is most important. Both of my gyrls are on soloxine, and I can tell it has made a HUGE difference in the way they act and feel (happy, energetic, alert as opposed to lethargic, dopey, don't care). TinyMityMo
If a dog is truely hypothyroid you would most likely see an elevated TSH. TSH stands for thyroid stimulating hormone. It is the hormone that says - make more T3 and T4. If there isn't enough T3 and T4 then the body should be trying to make more.
