Guest FrostyBottoms
I took Frosty in to the Dr. Monday because she has a small whitish spot on her eye that is on the outside of her eye on the lens. I thought at first it was a cataract but the vet said it wasn't. He gave me some steroid drops and there has been no change. He talked to an ophthalmologist and she told him is was probably corneal degeneration. He said to keep an eye on it and let him know of any changes. Anyone ever deal with this, if so can you tell me what to expect? Thanks! Jeannie
MP_the4pack
Okay I'm no doctor, but doesn't that sound a lot like Pannus?
Guest FrostyBottoms
Hmmm I just looked it up...I wonder if that is it.
ZoomDoggy
The "white spot" does not sound like pannus. I did have a hound who had basement membrane degeneration, which caused a corneal ulcer that wouldn't heal until the specialist did an open grid keratotomy. My Sissy was on eyedrops for life after that, and never had a recurrence. I would have your dog seen by the vet ophthalmologist directly, not just a consult over the phone from your reg vet. Specialists often catch what regular vets will miss. Edited February 7, 2008 by ZoomDoggy Quote ~Aimee, with Flower, Alan, Queenie, & Spodee Odee! Guest SoulsMom
Can you post a pic? Does she have any autoimmune issues?
Guest BlackandBrindle
Spud has a spot, whitish on the outside of his eye, that the vet told me is most likely a lipid deposit. It has no blood vessels running to it ( you can shine a pen light and see this) and he said unless it changes, not to worry about it. He's had it at least six months and there have been no changes. I wonder if it's something like that?

Guest FrostyBottoms
Can you post a pic? Does she have any autoimmune issues? I tried to get a picture...my zoom isn't that great on the digital...she doesn't have any issues that I know of. It kind of sounds like what Spud has...my vet may have mentioned that on the first visit...he was throwing around terms that I never heard before...he went to school with a vet ophthalmologist that can see her. He thought we could wait on that and see if there is any changes.
Jiffer
I have noticed in some cases from their lives on the track they end up with scarring on their eye. It's right on the surface of the eye and looks like a milky opaque. Icarus had quite a large spot like this on his eye. I can only surmise that it could be from being on a track and having sand flung at their eyes from the others feet? I did discuss it with my vet who felt that it was probably the same thing. If it isn't affecting vision, I wouldn't be concerned. I can't seem to find the picture of his. Guest FrostyBottoms
The vet put the green dye in her eye and flushed it all out so it was not ulcerated and he said it could be an old injury, but I swear I never noticed it before, and I think I would have.....but maybe not. Thanks for all of the input, i really do appreciate it!
ahicks51
Coco gets some white blobs on his eyes now and again; they change position over time. The vet says they're cholesterol deposits, and that it is unrelated to diet. Originally we tried thyroid meds, but that didn't do anything for the eyes. I *think* they are more prevalent when I use more beef heart than poultry; I've not taken a scientific approach to determining this, but it would argue that there IS a dietary aspect as beef has ~2x the amount of cholesterol as poultry. ZoomDoggy
Is the white area a circular spot, like a blister? Or is it more like a whitish area that might follow the crescent-shaped contour of the iris edge? Quote ~Aimee, with Flower, Alan, Queenie, & Spodee Odee! GeorgeofNE
I have fat deposits on MY eyes--and I have seen an opthamologist, and other than irritating the heck out of me from time to time, there is nothing to be concerned about. I was hoping that I could parlay it into a back door laser vision correction--but no such luck! Nuts! Hopefully that's all Miss Frosty has, and she'll be fine! That is what my vet thought it could be...I'm guessing that is what BlackandBrindle's Spud has, but she called them "lipid" deposits. Is the white area a circular spot, like a blister? Or is it more like a whitish area that might follow the crescent-shaped contour of the iris edge? It is just 1 little circle in the middle of her eye but on the outside of the lens because when I look at her side view I can see it is on the surface but it doesn't bulge out or anything. Guest BlackandBrindle
The vet told me they were lipid or fat deposits, so I took that to mean they were the same thing
Guest FrostyBottoms
Do the "deposits" on Spud's eye stick out or are they flush with his eye? Flashback to your old siggy! Changin things up, huh??
Guest BlackandBrindle
Yup, felt it was time for a change Spud's is flush to his eye. It looks like it's laying flat on his cornea if that makes sense. I cannot get a picture of it because even when Spud's head is still he'll move his eye. We've tried a lot
