Bordetella Before Dewey?

Lexy, and Gunner (and family) will be attending our first Dewey next week. Lexy is going for her yearly well check/ vaccines tomorrow, and Gunner next week. She has been with us for one year and she has not had the vaccine/ inhaler since she came to us. Should we get the Bordetella vaccine tomorrow?

You might do some research on how long it takes to become effective. I know some vaccines take longer than others.

 

Personally, I wouldn't, but then I am conservative with the shots.

Internasal works faster than the shots, but personally I wouldn't do it unless my dogs were going to be with lots of dogs in a kennel environment in an enclosed area with recirculated air. There are a lot of dogs but Dewey is not exactly that environment. My very unscientific theory is that stress of being away from their owners and surrounded by barking dogs almost 24/7 wears down the immune system of a lot of dogs in a boarding/kennel situation giving the kennel cough an "in". That is different than staying in a house or room with your owner and taking some walks...even if you are passing by a lot of dogs.

 

We require a bordatella every six months at work and two for puppies 6 months or younger and dogs of all ages still get it, especially if they stay for extended time. My vet says it works less than half the time. You can always spend the $15 and be in the "better safe than sorry" camp.

At work we had kennel cough run through a couple of weeks ago. Teeny was hit HARD and Wally never came down with anything (they share the same water bowl and she licks his mouth constantly). Teeny was vaccinated, Wally was not.

 

The kennel cough vaccine is such a crap shoot I am never again going to vaccinate my dogs. The crap you put into them obviously isn't worth the outcome. Kennel cough isn't a big deal, anyway, it's just a cold. With Robitussin and Slippery Elm Teeny's was gone in 7 days.

 

 

Also, most vet's offices use a live vaccine. Within 7 days of vaccination most dogs who have never been vaccinated for it before will come down with a mild case of it. Frankly I really just don't see the use.

I would go ahead and give them the intranasal bordetella.

I'd do it if your vet feels it would be effective this close to the trip. Mine suggested 3 weeks before our Abilene trip last summer, so that's what we did.

 

It's cheap and I've never had a dog react badly to it. I *have* had an unvaccinated dog come down with it; I suppose you could say it was just a cold but it kept us both up all night for quite a few days. Not fun.

I believe most bordetella vaccines are "effective" after 72 hours.

 

I personally don't have much faith in the vaccine... we see so many dogs with kennel cough after boarding even with the vaccine.
