  1. Cara would be a mattress tester, to ensure a comfortable 20 hours sleep per day
  2. The paddock was incredible. Completely enclosed, lots of toys there to play with and water bowls to drink from. Let her off the lead and she didn't look back, just bounced away to look at the horses through the fence (she loves watching horses!) That was the third or fourth run, when she was getting a bit tired. The first she was like a bullet from a gun, and the video of that one had me uttering something profane in admiration! The lunch, though, was a little disappointing as they had sold out of the sunday lunches, so she had to a have sunday lunch-flavoured treat pot. Nice, but not a sunday roast!! She had a great day out though, and can finally get into the car without me having to lift her!
  3. Well, we're about to get ready for The Adventure, making sure she has the right coat and agonising about the right toys to take...I wasn't like this planning for my son's school trips! We did, however, find a pub nearby which is not only dog-friendly, but does doggy Sunday lunch! Roast meat, veg, Yorkies (puddings, not terriers) and salt-free gravy, two-and-a-half quid! (Couple of bucks or so, to our American cousins). Full report to follow!
  4. ...does anyone else's hound actually tidy up their toys?? Cara has a spot by the front door where she takes all her toys when she's finished playing. The only dog I've ever owned who tidies up after themselves!
  5. Thank you all! We were lucky that when Cara came to us we were given her pedigree, medical records and racing history...60 races, 10 wins and 9 seconds. Clever girl! So having her racing name (Jumeirah Friend) we went looking for videos. Man, she's quick! And we decided to rename her. She had a pet name, but we weren't keen on it and frankly she ignored it anyway. Knowing from her pedigree and markings that she's Irish, we looked for Irish names and landed on Cara, which is Irish for 'friend.' Appropriate, given her racing name. And I speak a little Italian, and Cara Mia is Italian for 'my beloved,' which it just as appropriate. She now answers to Cara, but answers to Cara Mia more, so she has a middle name!
  6. Thing is with Cara, the best thing about walks is meeting new dogs and their peoples, so I reckon she'll survey the paddick, see there's no one to speak to and lay down. And when I throw her ball for her I'll get a stare saying "do I look like a retriever?? If you want the ball so damn much why did you throw it away in the first place?? Why don't you 'go fetch' it??"
  7. We'll be at the South Yorkshire one at Cannon Hall Farm Walkies!!
  8. Well, will be this weekend in an enclosed paddock. I suspect this will be the result... Greyluctance
  9. If we're okay to recommend vets outside of North America? Churchfield Vets 29 Sackville Street Barnsley S70 2DB United Kingdom 01226 733 333 Website Dr Keith Bellringer spayed our girl and gave us lots of information about the process and the differences between greyhounds and other breeds. He does a lot of work for Barnsley and District Animal Welfare, which finds homes for both greyhounds and far less interesting dogs, and he knows the breed well. BADAW
  10. Said our vet when we took Cara in to be spayed last week. Kind of took me aback, but he explained and it made sense. Anyhoo, I did a bit of research and I found this article which was pretty much what our vet said - he does a lot of work for the greyhound rescue charity where we adopted Cara from, and clearly knows the breed well. Interesting article
  11. South Yorkshire, UK here. In addition to being a (new) hound owner, I read voluminously, am a games geek and play guitar (terribly). Oh, I also do a spot of accountancy and IT training when I can fit it in! 😁
  12. Thanks all! Despite the first picture, she is actually a very happy girl! Here she is in Long Dog pose!
  13. Cara Hi all, first time poster. Became a proud greyhound owner for the first time 2 weeks ago - always been a gundog/retriever guy, though had cats in recent years. Cara is a former racer, just turned 4 years old and has settled in wonderfully, to say that up til 2 weeks ago she'd never been in a house before. Would love to post a pic, but the file size limit is a challenge, but I'll figure it out! (Edit: photo link to Dropbox above)
