  1. Shopping around for heartworm preventative and someone recommended pets-megastore.com/au. No prescription necessary for orders from the USA. Price for 20 chewables for large dogs is $49.99 (plus shipping of $4.94) for the equivalent of Heartgard Plus. The best price I found from US suppliers was $76.95 for 12 doses. Anyone use this site?
  2. I called my vet who said it is a relatively new test and is not included in the standard blood values. He didn't know the extra cost, either, but apparently there is one. I gather he isn't called upon to do it often. I'll know more when I go back on Dec. 21 for another bloodtest.
  3. I have the lab results from the Sept. dental here in front of me...does the value for SDMA say SDMA or is it something else...or would it not routinely be done for a dental workup?
  4. Cooper's recent Wellness workup resulted in a call from the vet recommending a recheck in a month of the CREA level. It is 1.9; in Sept. during a dental workup it was 1.8 and in 2014 it was 1.7. The vet said it could be the result of dehydration, all the other levels were "perfect." I will, of course bring her back for the recheck but in the meantime should I believe him and not worry? She will be 6 in January.
  5. Owners took her to the vet first thing Monday morning and of course, nothing definitive was found, her temp was normal but they gave her subcutaneous fluids to combat the lack of drinking and the vomiting, an injection of Cerenia for nausea (she hasn't been eating since the vomiting episode) and Famotitine to sooth the esophagus that may be irritated. One of them is usually out in the yard with her and they keep the yard clean so she definitely isn't getting to her own leftover poop. Today (Tuesday) they reported she is eating again, no problem. Scary but hopefully "just one of those things."
  6. Hmmmm....ok, I won't ask. Your secret is safe...I won't ask. Thanks for the response, though!
  7. I am in contact with my former foster's new family and they messaged me today saying that the dog vomited up dark liquid at 4:30 a.m. There was no food in it and it smelled like, well, vomit. The dog has been off her food all day today but willingly takes treats and her behavior is her normal, lovable self after initially being listless. When I heard "dark" I immediately thought blood but could it be bile? Or, rabbit poop? She is fond of that and they know enough to keep the yard as clean as possible. She has not vomited any more after the 4:30 am episode. The little bit of food she has eaten has been done slowly, chewing every piece of kibble which if not like the normal inhalation method of eating. It is like she is going through the motions. I recommended a visit to the vet first thing in a.m. with a sample of the vomit which luckily they do have. Any thing else come to mind?
  8. Cooper has dug herself a nice trench under a tree and enjoys laying in it on hot days. She is on Heartgard and Seresto but do these protect against whatever little buggers that could be lurking in the soil?
  9. Has anyone seen any adverse reaction to the Seresto collar? Maybe it is coincidental but Cooper has been off her food a bit since I put the Seresto on her on Saturday. She has been eating the same food (Nature's Domain) since we got her in Sept. 2013 and our foster is gobbling it up as usual but I did not put the collar on the foster.
  10. Thanks for this response. Apparently, these are made in Vietnam so I will pass...too close to China for comfort!
  11. I got my bag at Costco also, so much cheaper than Amazon. I broke down and opened the bag, gave one to each of the girls. They kept smelling the bag, knew that it was for them. They get chewed up into small bits that look safe, size wise.
  12. Anyone have an opinion about "Checkups" dental dog treats, by Sugar Creek Pet Products? I bought a bag today but am getting so freaked out by dog treat problems I hestitate to open it! The jerky treats I picked up at the same time are going back, even though they are Made in the USA of USA sourced ingredients.
  13. I have run out of topicals so started reading this forum. Would you still recommend this product vs. Frontline or any of the other topicals?
  14. I called the vet and he prescribed 20mg of Prednisone to be taken in diminishing dosages, 1/2 tab 2x daily for 3 days, 1/2 tab 1xdaily for 3 days then 1/2 tab every other day until finished, 15 tabs total. I feel better and I hope Cooper will, too.
  15. Maybe a stool guard muzzle would break the cycle if it is a habit. My next question...how can I jury rig a regular muzzle into a stool guard?
  16. Maybe it is a habit, like chewing on fingernails. The vet said they were not infected or impacted.
  17. I may have spoken too soon...the licking continues. Now what?
  18. Yes, indeed, the anal glands were to blame. Took Coop to the vet today, on the advice of this wonderful site. Of course, the first thing she did upon arrival home was lay down for a good look-see-lick but I hope the urge goes away now that her coffers are empty.Thank you, all, especially TBHounds and NeylasMom!
  19. Cooper has been licking the underside of her tail for a couple of days. I cleaned it up with first aid wash and wrapped it in gauze and vet wrap (that stayed on all of 5 minutes until I turned my back.) I then applied some neo-predef powder I had from a butt licking incident that cleared up when combined with some antibiotics. Could this be indicative of anal gland issues as someone suggested? I know there is a gland back there (per Wikipedia, the "violet gland" or "supracaudal") but that is on the outside and upper part of the tail. Even so, could this be the culprit and if so, what is done about it? Is a vet visit in order here?
  20. Am researching for a friend who is looking for someone to board 2 greys in the July, 2015 timeframe. She lives in the Hunterdon/Warren Counties, NJ area and is hoping to find someone who could board the dogs at their house but not too far from hers.
  21. Thanks for the info...I guess I didn't do too badly at $28.
  22. Yes, that is what he prescribed during the exam. The vet never offers advice on where to get a drug for less money!
  23. What do you mean, when and where I use it? Directions say apply 2x daily to affected spot. Should I stop after a certain length of time?
