  1. Don I dont have copies of any of the test results.

MaryJane urine sample goes in tomorrow. Logistics are tricky because Im an hour away from the groups vet. Other concerned parties have been assisting with transportation.

Off to read about PLE. Thanks for the idea. I love this site!

(I hate posting from the phone. Half of my punctuation goes away and makes things look crazy!)

  2. Yay! Another hookworm topic!

Im fostering a ten year old double bounce who has had hooks for an unknown amount of time. He just had old dude blood work, and his protein levels are in the toilet.

He has two feet that swell up like crazy with activity. (He was mostly a tripod when he landed here.) We did a week of cephalexin and are now on doxycycline. Initial tests for TBDs are negative and x-rays are clear.

His voice is raspy. Chest films are clear. No issues eating dry food. Appetite is mostly good, but he prefers his kibble seasoned with shaky cheese, honey, or syrup.

We had a night where it seemed like sleep aggression was an issue. He came after people twice with absolutely dead eyes. (I can lay all over this dog, no issues.) He sounded like he was choking on his sleep just before one of those episodes.

One rear leg bows out. He walks on the outside toe. That is a foot that swells.

He is a walking skeleton. He has all his marbles. He just blew his coat in a very serious way. He can see and hear just fine. He might be the nicest dog I have ever met.

Does anyone have ideas? One issue (hooks), or several? New P&P samples are going to the vet Friday.

  3. I lost my Joe in a similar fashion this past November. I woke up in the middle of the night, and his hind end was just gone. I knew that night that I would let him go in the morning, but I was lucky in that once I got him back to bed he was happy to be there and not in any distress. I know I did the right thing, but I still look back and wonder if there was another choice. I miss him terribly.

Your girl was upset. She was scared. You took her to someone who evaluated her and gave you advice, then gave you space to make the choice and spend time with Raffle. Taking her home would have been difficult to impossible. You would have had to keep her on puppy pads, clean everything that came out of her, possibly learn to catheterize her. You would have had to leave her alone every day when you went to work. She would have been scared and uncomfortable.

You made the right decision. It was a horrible one, it always is. I am so sorry Raffle died, but so very glad she wasnt in pain and that you were able to be with her. Take care of yourself.

  4. Jefferson spent a good chunk of time outside gardening today. Hes blowing his coat and his butt is newly bald, andplusalso red. Legs are pinkish. Im a neglectful mom.

My others didnt have this problem. What kind of sunblock is safe and preferably easy? Spray on for kids? Oh he licks. A lot. Anything that gets put on him is eventually going down his throat.

  5. Hi!

When I first brought Jefferson home, he was just fine crated during the day when I went to work, with a potty break at lunch. About a month later, he got used to me being home over Christmas break, and the SA got ugly.

Tried Prozac. No appetite. DAP diffuser, didnt have enough time to work. Kong, ha! Xanax, YASSSSSSS but its not an every day solution.

What eventually worked was xanax the second I got out of bed, so it had enough time to get into his system by the time I had to go to work. Left him loose, not crated, but gated in a safe area, wearing a muzzle and with TV on. It took a bit for him to stop hurling himself at the door after I left, but one day, he just watched me leave from his spot on the sofa. Hes been mostly ok since. I tapered down the Xanax over a couple weeks. Jefferson cant be behind a closed door. He has to be loose in living room/kitchen/dining room. A morning walk to get out some energy helped, but it was stinking cold and I just wasnt doing it every day.

    Better living through chemistry.

  6. I don't do FB either, but a lot of people that train and raise greyhounds are on the Pro Greyhound Movement FB page. They are always happy to tell an adopter about their dog in the kennel or at the farm. If you know someone on FB I'm sure they can join and ask about your pup. I don't know if Brie is on there, but someone from the farm she was raised at might be if Brie isn't a member.

Thanks. Ill see if someone can join and try to poke at her.

  7. Brees used to bite me on the rear when (now ex)hubby and I fooled around. Put holes in more than one pair of jeans until we learned not to do that around her.

Kids and Brees dont mix well. They make her nervous, which makes me nervous, so I avoid the situation as much as possible.

Your dog will change a lot over the course of the next year year, and even more later.

Keep the kid and the dog mostly separated until both are older and wiser. Consider taking the kid with when you walk the dog, but with the kid having a separate keeper. Get some baby gates. Avoid doing the stuff that you know will cause the dog to do ouchy things. Give it time. Relax.
