I used Petsmart with DaVid and was very happy with the training, but I totally agree with the big box stores noise and distractions. Also, there are a lot of idiot people that bring their dogs to these stores and do not have a clue on how to manage them (or their kids). I have had to correct many kids on the proper way to approach my dogs (for their safety and also my dogs safety)..But, like racindog says-it is too early in your relationship to start training them..just love them and give them a lot of time to get to know you.

I do know that Healthy Paws will insure a super senior. Across the board it is about $45.00 premium a month, but it is a $750 deductible with only 60% coverage. I just checked this out a couple of weeks ago. The Healthy Paws lady on the phone said it did not make any difference on what breed they were or if they were a mutt.

I have Healthy Paws for both Galgos. I am just fine with them, but have had Trupanion for three Greyhounds and were equally fine with them...except when they said DaVid had allergies and my vet said it was definitely IBD. They would not listen to my vet (and she wrote them a letter)..kind of pissed me off.

On another post I said I give my two Galgos OraVet chews. It has completely stopped the bad breath and leaves their teeth tarter free. Mine eat the ones made for over 50 lbs.
-
I buy the Ora Vet chews. I am seeing great results.
-
Chewy.com has the best prices I have seen. And you get free shipping if order is over $49.
Oh and I do not know why I said confortis collars..I don't think there is such a thing..LOL I meant to say Seresto collars.

I live in Savannah, Ga and it is ver hot here. I walk mine at daybreak and that is all. They will go in the back yard to do their business, but no walks. I am very concerned with heat strokes with this heat/humidity here so do not force mine to do anything outside.

About toys..All of my dogs have loved stuffed animals that I buy from Goodwill. I take any plastic parts off (just cut them out) and I am careful about internal parts like batteries and squawkers. I also learned my lesson about those tiny round plastic balls (millions of them in a toy) and make sure I do not buy any stuffed animals with them because I was vacuuming forever trying to get them all..lol. The Humane society here in Savannah has many crates, all sizes, sitting outside of their buildings just rusting away..I would check with them. My Galgos love to sleep in their crates, but not all dogs like them. Baby gates are really handy. My dogs all wear tag collars and wear them whenever they are not on walks and then I use the martingale collars. I buy my tag collars from 2HoundDesigns.com and my Martingale collars from Unruly Tails. Unruly Tails make great collars at a very reasonable price. I use the 1 1/2 inch ones...Just google them.

On another note about pet insurance. My two Galgos are healthy as they can be so far. But, all of my Greyhounds ended major insurance. MRIs (plural), surgeries, bone cancer (two of them), corns (two of them) and on multiple medicines..DaVid was on 5 pills 3 times a day..Lady was the same. My vet could not believe the maintenance involved with my hounds. I feel it was just the "luck of the draw"..maybe the next ones will not ever need to go to the vet except for their yearly.
hounds needed major insurance. I use Healthy Paws, but Trupanion is good too (just high on the premiums).
Oh and one more note: Harnesses give dogs much more pulling power (example: sled dogs), but I always start out with a spook harness because they cannot get loose from it. Sometime I use a collar and a spook harness at the same time. Just depends on the dog. I still use a "gentle leader" and a collar on Mousie. Her prey drive is tremendous. Best to you and hope you find the perfect hound. (most of them are).
-
When you get your dog, I can probably help you with a harness. I use the Seresto collars. They last for 8 months.

How about a German Shepard?
-
I used to use electric toothbrushes on Lady. But, she died. I give Ronnie and Mousie 1 Ora Vet chew a day. So far, their teeth are great! My Vet recommends them.

LOL. The IV bags were used walking outside to keep the splint dry.
-
I vet gave me some empty IV bags. I used them on legs to keep them dry. I just taped the top of the bag to leg. And reused it over and over.

I have had 3 Greyhounds and currently have 2 Galgos. I have never had any trouble with any of mine other than having to work with them on house breaking. Well, DaVid did chew all of the corners of my furniture..lol. But, all of them settled in very well and very fast.

To rule out heat, try putting a box fan (pointed at her) in the room. I always had to do that for DaVid in the summer because it is HOT in Savannah, Ga.
-
Have you ever thought about adopting a cat? They need less care and are rather independent. Just suggesting...
-
Mary Pat, that is exactly how I feel. I will never get over it.
-
And Don killed DaVid. For no reason.

I actually have a great sitter that moves into my house when I have to be out of town. It has always worked great. I leash walk mine a couple of times a day. In the winter (Savannah, Ga) we walk a couple of miles, but in the summer it is more like 2 blocks. We do not do dog parks. I also have a very small fenced in yard, so they can trot around and throw stuffies. I have never had one bit me..though one of them had bad sleep startle..so, I just learned not to get close to him while he was sleeping. Mine sleep in crates in my room at night and I never hear a sound from them. So, that works great. They want to be close to their owners. None of them were house broken when I got them, but they learn quickly and then again keep them on a tight schedule. Heart Guard Plus and a Serento collar works for us.

All of my hounds have had the flu shot every years with no side effects.

I use them with no problems.

I know the feeling and am so very sorry.

Both of my Galgos sleep in their crates at night. Actually they both will go in them to sleep in the day, too.
