Is he having any swelling of the joints or anything like that? If the vet thinks there is ANY chance at all that he will also need steroids, see about switching from Deramaxx to another non NSAID pain med. Mia was on Deramaxx and then when they wanted to start her on Prednisone (her Erlichea turned into immune mediated polyarthritis) we had to watch her like a hawk because you aren't supposed to give the 2 drugs together.

Is he on Doxy yet? I hope he feels better!

Poor guy! Does it look like he snagged it on something or does it look brittle? If it looks brittle and yucky, you might want to take him to the vet to have him tested for SLO. Epsom salts will make it feel better and make sure to keep it dry in between soaks so no bacteria can grow.
