Still wet behind the ears

Still wet behind the ears (3/9)

  1. Thank you everyone. There have been some good input that I didn't think of. Purses, I use to leave mine hanging on the railing at the top of the stairs. I keep medication in my purse too. Since last week, I now leave it high up on my dresser. Cats - I don't have any cats, but it is very possible that your cat could knock a bottle of medication of a shelf or ledge to the floor or counter where your dog can find it. The safest place for all medications and supplements would be behind a closed door. I am so happy that so many of you are going to make sure that this does not happen to you...
  2. Denis and I were extremely stressed out last week but I wasn't able to say anything until now. Now that it has had a happy ending, I have decided to write about it, mostly as a reminder to check your homes so that you won't have to go through the same thing as we did. One week ago, Monday, while we were at work, TJ found a bottle of Advil that we had left in house. The Advil was in a bag somewhere in the house and TJ found it, and chewed right through the plastic and ate who-knows-how-many of the "candy". By the time we got home and found the empty bottle, it was totally mangled and only 5 pills were found on the floor. We know that the bottle had been opened and some taken, but we have no idea how many had been in there and how many TJ got. We also had no idea when he had done it - the bottle was bone dry when we found it. We took TJ, who was vomiting by this time, Rowdy and Lefty with us to the emergency vet. We weren't sure if Rowdy and Lefty had got some too so we thought we better get some treatment for them too just to be safe. Rowdy and Lefty were not vomiting or showing any signs like TJ was. TJ went first, evaluated and put on IV fluids, blood work done and given a dose of charcoal. He remained at the emerg overnight so he could be closely monitored. Rowdy and Lefty were each given a dose of charcoal and sent home with us. The next morning, we picked up TJ and took him to our regular vet for continued treatment. For the next 5 days in he**, we were going day-by-day to see if TJ would survive. Most dogs who have such toxic poisonings do not survive, and if by chance he did survive, he would most likely have some permanent damage to his kidneys and other organs. The vets were most concerned with ulcers and perforation of his intestines, this would require immediate major surgery and with damaged kidneys, they weren't sure he would survive the surgery. Wednesday and Thursday were the worst days. He was heading downhill - they were positive he had ulcers and internal bleeding as well as damage to his kidneys. We struggled through those days, so stressed that we could barely function. On Friday we saw some improvement and were very hopeful although is blood work still showed some internal issues and he still had blood in his urine. Saturday morning showed considerable improvement. Enough so that he as able to come home for the weekend. So we happily took our "walking pharmacy" (he had many medications that had to go home with him) home. He was exhausted and spent the whole day sleeping but was really happy to be home. On Sunday, we had our own TJ back. He was perky, energetic and the very happy-go-lucky boy. It was so wonderful to see him like that. Yesterday, Monday, I took him back to the vet for a recheck and amazingly, his blood work showed everything was back to normal - including his kidneys. It is a miracle! We are all ecstatic, including our vet. He is being weaned off all the medications that he has been on for the past week and goes back to the vet in 2-weeks for a follow up to make sure everything is still good. All I can say is it is a miracle that he made it and I thank our vet and the technicians for the wonderful and special care they gave to TJ. Our vet closes the office at 6:30 everyday yet TJs vet went in a few times every night while he was there to take him out for a short walk and to make sure he was okay. Bless his heart. Please...I urge you to go through your home and make sure that there is nothing toxic or dangerous that your dog can get into. We have gone through our entire house and put away anything that we can that is even slightly toxic or dangerous. We have blocked off the rooms that we cannot do anything about such as my studio and Denis' stained glass work room.
  3. Thank you everyone. It has been a few weeks and we are feeling a little better but the adjustment is difficult. Shadow was one of our original pack; all that is left now from our original pack is Mandy and she is "feeling" the loss of Shadow who was her constant companion of more than 8 years. The house is so quiet without our "vocal" boy (he loved to talk to us, he loved his nightly "roo" which got everyone going, and he was a huge smiler) - he had a huge personality. Mandy tried to get everyone to roo a few nights ago but none of our current pack roo - it was kind of sad. We have his ashes back and they are in a very special place. We are making sure to give Mandy extra attention while she (and we) adjust. We sure are missing our big boy.
  4. August 1, 1999 to November 7, 2009. After a very brief (3-week) battle with cancer, our beloved Shadow left us. We loved our happy, smiling and fun boy and will miss him dearly. Our house is so quite without his huge personality. Rest in peace my Shadow-man!
  5. Onyx (Sytem Puff Dad)- July 27, 1996 to October 9, 2008 Goodbye my sweet, loveable, goofy boy. Run Free! Until we meet again. We Love You and will miss you dearly.
  6. I am so sorry Liz. {{{Big Hugs}}} We'll be facing the same thing with Onyx very shortly - cancer too...
  7. Good News! Keep improving sweet Mia girl. Get better fast.
  8. Always so difficult to write. Remember that Eliza knew she was was loved and that you did your best for her. Until I started with the board, I didn't know very much about Rimadyl. A few months ago, when my sister told me her vet had put her older dog on Rimadyl for arthritis, I told her all I had learned about it and steered her toward Glucosomine. She made the wise decision to stop Rimadyl and started giving him glucosomine instead. He is doing great. Thanks to you and everyone else who has spread the word, many other potential problems have been avoided. Thanks
  9. Hi Crazy Canuck - I assume you live in or near Walkerton? I can understand your scare of e-Coli... it's not something easily forgotten. A friend of mine had 'a bout' (for lack of a better word) with e-coli a few years ago from poorly cooked chicken (she partially cooked the chicken then turned it off when company came and continued cooking it over an hour later - then ate it for supper. Bad move.). It wasn't pretty! She was off work for many weeks. I live just outside of Ottawa. I no longer live in the city, and our water comes from a well. We had a reverse osmosis drinking water treatment put into our house a few summers ago. We'll never again drink water from the tap or untreated water. I've heard too many horror stories about city water treatment systems. Paranoid, maybe. But I remember... Glad to hear your kids and yourselves are doing better and hope everyone continues to be well.
  10. Oops. Guess I should make sure I am registered before posting. That was my post about Shadow and food allergies...
  11. I haven't yet had a chance to do much research on the BARF diet although I am very intereseted in putting Shadow (& possibly Mandy) on it due to his food allergies. He still has a ways to go before I can change his diet again - he is not compeltely back to normal yet. Once my project deadline at work has past, the end of this month, I will have some spare time again and will start reading. I have a question though. Both Mandy and Shadow tend to gulp down their food and I know it will make me very nervous to give either of them a raw bone. I'm afraid they will try to gulp them down without crunching and chewing them completely. Does/or did Thunder do this? And if so, what was your solution? Or if you have any suggestions?

  13. Greytux - may I make a suggestion? I suggest changing the "State" resides in; to "Country" or "State & Country" or "Province & Country" (or something along those lines) for those of us that do not live in the States. Thanks.
  14. And the birthdate for Shadow is 8/ 1999 (not 1997). Thanks.
