  1. probiotics and digestive enzymes work well for my guys.
  2. mary elizabeth's email is simcorgi@aol.com since she is deaf i always communicate w/ her via email.mary elizabeth promptly responds. i have worked w/ her for the past 17 years, yes.... i'm really well trained! if you write, as i had said before...felix sent you, you can mention me too...andrea
  3. what part of ct??? in the southern part i have a couple of suggestions. portchester obedience club but with MARY ELIZABETH SIMPSON....she speaks dog, horse and greyhound(knows them well- felix did many many classes w/ her). white plains, ny- wpsat.net, mary elizabeth also teaches there, the rest of the instructors are grey saavy, i've sent way too many there and are know as a "lifer".at wpsat they will encourage you to bring a mat for downs and sits, they know the grey's attention span is short and know what things are most important...RECALLS! all of my dogs literally will knock me down on a recal. they also have more than enough experience w/ any sort of anti-social behavior and they are very concerned w/ a resue's possible not so perfect past and handle it well.wpsat generously donates to our group's silent auction annually. check out reinwood corgi, that's mary elizabeth's kennel, you might consider some privates w/ her. she lives in greenwich, ct is a short state- i make it to RI in 2.5 hrs from just outside nyc. if you check either out, tell them felix sent you!
  4. is she getting as much exercise as when she was not showing any of the behaviors mentioned??? during the winter months many pups exercise declines and that's when they often get "into trouble". a tired dog is a good dog! try some mental challenges as well, maybe training(look for a local obedience club). training wipes them out for at least a day or more. also, the practice that is entailed tuckers them out mentally. bundle up and WALK!
  5. your pup is just adjusting to a whole new life. after results at the vet, remember it might take a while for things to settle. some people show it in their gut, it seems like ALL greyhounds show it in thier gut- from my experience anyway. as long as it isn't shooting out like a fire hose, be patient! remember she was most likely just wormed, change in diet, change in water, total change in life style! be patient
  6. costco in san antonio had it, but nothing in lower nys so far!
  7. a syrup made out of alum and water(elmer's glue consistancy) will work better than tabasco sauce. a trick from a trainer friend, you can find it in the spice shelves at the market. mmmm.....definicy??? how about a different food as well as the behavorist. when i changed foods my female stopped eating her feces.
  8. my dogs ring the bells to go out. easy to teach them. but watch out....felix now has learned that he will get my attention ringing the bells. he will ring them to have the blanket put on the couch(rings and then walks up to the couch and stares, rings and walks back to the couch until the cover is on!) and this morning rang it at 6 am. so, dh let him out and back in, then came back to bed. well....felix rang the bell non-stop since he wanted to get into bed and couldn't unlatch the gate to the bedrooms(that's another story). so,yes, it works....almost too well! pm me if you want instuctions
  9. if you dog has puked, haven't you ever looked at what they reguritate a couple of hours later??? WHOLE KIBBLE!
  10. some people live to a ripe old age eating....things we would never dream of! some dogs do better on....things we would never dream of. if it works, then stick to it. i think science diet has some newer "better" quality foods. i always have used science diet canned food when there was a need for a canned food(older, convelesing dog) and my vet swears by it, his dogs live to 18+!!! do what works for duke!
  11. in the scenario of humans using duct tape for plantar's warts it takes many weeks. basically it's being smothered. good for you having a dog who will keep the tape on! emily ate the tape on her corns! just keep it taped and wait, and wait and wait then see.
  12. here is a recipe passed on by a saluki friend: Here is the basic Saluki diet recommended by my holistic vet - to be fed twice daily - this is for about a 50 lb dog - feed more or less according to the dog's activity level and needs - take a week to 10 days to switch over to this diet from commercial food to avoid upset tummies. at each meal feed; 1 cup meat (lean lamb (broiling removes most of the fat); beef, chicken, turkey (alternate meat sources every few days so dog received optimum nutrition) 3/4 cup organic cooked brown rice or cooked whole oatmeal or 1 sweet potato 1/4 cup steamed, finely ground vegetables, i.e. carrots, broccoli green beans, cabbage (organic preferred) 2/3 tsp Animal Essentials vitamin powder 2/3 tsp Solgar Bone Meal (for humans) 1 tabelspoon extra virgin olive oil Then - once or twice a week add a hardboiled egg and a couple of tablespoons of organic cottage cheese you can also add grated cheese, a few sardines, some salmon, etc. as additional nutrition
  13. as long as you are only administering one asprin a day and remember it can not be coated, there shouldn't be any problems. my vet starts w/ asprins before he ventures into more expensive drugs. i do agree w/ everyone that checking for a tick borne disease or xrays are in order. hoping for a speedy and not exciting investigation.
  14. i seem to remember reading something like this last winter from other owners. mmmmm......are the dogs not as active and still eating the same amount of food?? i find that often has something to do w/ the gas. probiotics, rice, flagyl, the right food and yoguart(my dogs don't tolerate it but love it) all can help especially since we can't open the windows this time of the year. (this too shall pass )
  15. good suggestion going to rice and chicken or boiled beef. make sure it's over cooked white rice(add more water than usual) and take it slow.(the eat huge amounts of rice, 25% can be a protien) when his stool returns to normal, than try introducing small amounts of food. if there is a change in stool then may i suggest that you contact your vet and bring in a sample. maybe that miracle drug flagyl might be called for. it has straighten out many a gut in my house. sometimes 2 rounds are necessary, but boy does it work. i use a probiotic and found my sensitive boy does nicely on duck , using hollistic select duck for some time now. it was trial and error. welcome to the club! always talk to your pet/feed store and make sure the food is returnable if it doesn't agree. most will take it back.
  16. saline solution, cleans it and helps promote healing. if it's an area that bandaged i will apply a dot of frankensence....yeah the stuff that one of the 3 wisemen brought baby jesus. it's fantastic, my adoption rep told me about it.
  17. i would scream out,"my dogs will EAT yours... MY DOGS ARE TRAINED TO CATCH SMALL PREY" sounds a bit extreme, but that is what that moron needs to hear!that is if he dares walking near you, it sounds like your DIL opened her mouth and share a few choice words of wisdom that he needed. people like that are jerks, plain and simple. thank god you didn't break anything, try some motrin and soaking in a hot epsom's salts bath- it works.
  18. i was told NOT to soften up the corn before hulling- it's easier to dig out when hard. it doesn't look like a clear defination around the corn, compare photos of the BIG corn! the border around the larger corn is easier to follow so it can be hulled. it looks like teddy is walking it down, emily used to do that and it was impossible to hull since she sanded all of the defining edges off walking. i would look into the oinment mentioned, the corns come back w/ hulling.(it's not difficult to hull when they are large)
  19. but i have had numerios sessions of really infamed nail beds. the only thing that worked after cleaning it well- then powdering it w/ a medicated powder- gold bond or ammends, and KEEPING IT DRY! lots of powder, no more washing and with in a week it dried out and healed. my adoption rep who happens to be an excellent vet told me to do this. it's worth a try. my standard vet- who i have used since the late 70's and is also into "home remedies" likes desitin, the oinments for babies tushes. it's the same theory- keep it dry. but the powder works faster and doesn't get all over the place. it's really frustrating, it looks like an oinmtent and antibiotics should do the trick, but the moisture is the cultprit. before more tests or drugs, why not give it a try? if you can look up "cracked bleeding nail bed" topic from last fall, felix did a job on his nail bed and it got worse after traditional common sense treatment. then i finally called my rep. are is nails falling off??? that's the true sign of slo. there also is a good section on care of nail beds in the care of your racing and retired greyhound book, worth a peek.
  20. many thanks for remembering dear sweet emily. 3/1/03- 1/2/2010 it has been a bitter sweet holiday, missing her and remembering the good & sweet and being reminded of her pain at the end.
  21. how about using some treats and doing some training while you walk. that will make it more intersting and fun. include some recalls, about faces, circle to the left, circle to the right, stand/stays and what ever. if it's a utility walk getting ready for work, that's another story, but if it's nice out some training and changing your pace while walking makes things more interesting. lucky me, annie has a high prey drive and we don't have a shortage of squirrels! so walks are NEVER boering for her and she keep felix on his toes.
  22. http://forum.greytalk.com/index.php/topic/237762-hookworms-paracur-and-interceptor/ i hope the link works- (found on a google search for hookworms and interceptor) i keep my dogs on interceptor all year, they have managed to stay clean of hookworm and other worms as well. i have been using the product for over 20 years. prior to interceptor my salukis always had hook worms, it was really a bitch trying to keep them worm free.
  23. that's the route i took w/ emily. jan 2nd it will be one year since we lost her to osteo. i have always felt very strongly that i would only consider pain meds. i have never regretted my decision either. "MAKE THE BEST DECISION YOU CAN OUT OF LOVE & IT WILL NOT BE THE WRONG ONE."- well said.
  24. i have had numerous dogs on and off of pred. over the years, never encountered that reaction. i will say that my addisonian had absoutley no tolerance to weather changes, be it hot or cold(pred. is one of the meds used to treat addison's). that goes w/ the disease(my supervisor at work has it and her thermostat is not functioning), they just can't regulate their body tempt. do call your vet, and maybe take your pup's tempt- it never hurts(i use a digital rectal thermometer- it's really fast).
  25. wasn't there a cesar milan episode w/ a dog that went bonkers when ever his show aired? maybe you can find it and try some of his tricks, it worked for them! .......or maybe she is trying to tell you she wants a new friend? your pick! gotta love that puppy!
