    Slip Lead for Walking?

    The freezing  likely has nothing to do with the martingale which is the only safe collar for walking a greyhound. I personally would trash the slip lead so that no one could accidentally use it and injure your dog. 

    We've had our share of dogs who froze during walks including Brood Mama Petunia who quickly figured out that when she decided a walk was over, I would call home and the car would come and get her (not that she was spoiled.) I'm pretty sure that Petunia had some minor pain that escalated on walks, and when she was done, she was done. Her freezing bacame known here as The Petunia Pause. 

    Rocket, on the other hand, would freeze when he realized that we were heading for home. Anything to prolong the walk was his favorite thing to try. 

    I would let him stand there for a bit, and then turn around as if I were going to walk the other way. He would normally follow. Once he started walking I would do another 180 and continue walking without slowing down or breaking stride. 99% of the time that worked just fine and he would continue on. Basically you just walk in a circle with the lead as close to you as possible so that you have control. Once you've broken their concentration by circling a time or two,  they will almost always follow you and keep walking. 

    Be sure to check your dog's paw pads to make sure that the walking surface isn't causing an issue or making their pads rough. Also keep an eye on the pads to check for corns. A corn can be present before it appears through the pad, and cause them some pain, so you want to keep ahead of that. It will feel like a hard bump through the pad. We always used Burt's Bees hand cream on the pads of our dogs that had corns. It worked well to keep the pads soft. Good luck.

    I just leave the vacuum cleaner in the living room 24/7. If someone stops by I can say I was just getting ready to clean.

    Grizzly Salmon Oil Formula Change?

    I had used the grizzly salmon oil since 2009, both pre and post addition of pollock oil and also post company sale.  About 2 years ago my IBD dog got really bloody stool and vomiting from a new bottle of the mixed oil, so I changed to a different brand.  I don’t think it was the mix of oils specifically that made him sick, maybe just a bad batch or a mishandled bottle on top of feeling let down by the company changes and my dog getting sick after being a loyal customer for so long.  
     

    The one I use now is a mix of smaller more sustainable fish. My dogs haven’t had any problems and their skin and coat are just as nice.  
     

    We've been able to get the one with no pollock oil or less pollock oil until the most recent order. Now that product doesn't seem to exist online. When I went back and looked at our past purchases and notes for each dog, it seems we had the same issue with the pollock oil blend a few years ago with a different dog so I made sure to buy the correct package after that. This might have been vendors having stock of the older product until it ran out - not sure, 

    Maek and Gracie continue to be bunny soft on the new oil  (Max and Neo brand) and no stomach upset at all.

    I feed all my dogs several ounces (2-6) of 2%milk after every evening meal.  They LOVE it. It is their dessert.  Sometimes they will drink it before finishing their food they like it so much.  I have had many dogs including 10 greyhounds and everyone of them liked milk.  As long as they are not lactose intolerant it is good for them.  Whats not to like about high quality protein, calcium, vitamins & minerals & more?  I also believe it helps with allergies to.  Of course honey made by the local bees is the standard but if you can't get that it appears to me that milk from local cows helps.  I love milk also. I grew up on a dairy farm.  It is natures most nearly perfect food! 

    We don't use much milk here so it usually goes bad. The solution we've found is to buy lactose-free milk, either Lactaid or a store brand. The lactose free milk lasts in the refrigerator for 3-4 weeks, even when it's been opened. We get way more mileage out of a carton of milk now. 

    What To Wear On A Chilly Desert Morning

    The nights are currently cold here in the desert. Mark and Gracie spent the night under their blankets and it was still cold in the house this morning after they had breakfast. 

    An anonymous friend had Miss Houndtime Irene make a housecoat for Prtunia back when she first arrived. Petunia promptly poo-pooed that idea and wouldn't wear it. She would spend the entire time rubbing the walls trying to get the coat off. Subsequently, the coat has been worn on chilly days by Kate, LaVida, and now Gracie. 

    Gracie tolerates the coat but like Petunia, wants it taken off after a short time. She did take a brief nap wearing it this morning, so I guess it's a gradual adjustment, or we need it to get even colder. :lol

    For anyone following this thread: We started using the new oil that I linked above (Max and Neo Brand) and it seems to be very good. No stomach upset, solid poops and both pups are getting bunny soft again. I'm seeing more products appearing with this brand name. They are a local company here in Phoenix, so I think we wil be seeing more products on Amazon, Chewy etc from them.

    The GSOD - Greyhound Scream of Death.

    Could be cramps or the leg being asleep. Some of these dogs are real drama queens over little things, and some will stand there with a broken leg and not make a sound. I know that's not much help, but I think we've all been through at least one GSOD that seemed to happen for no reason over the years. It will scare the life out of you.  If it continues, I would think about seeing an orthopedic vet specialist just to be safe. Also check the paw pads if this is happening as he stands up. 

    Olewo Carrot Recall

    I submitted an inquiry to their Customer Service last night when I didn't find any recall notices. Will report back when I receive a response. 

    Of course, we poured the last of our most recent bag into the container recently and no longer have the bag with the date code.

    I've seen nothing about a recall and last purchased them a few months ago from Chewy. I'm thinking that I would have received notification from Chewy if the product we received could have been affected. Not finding anything online about a recall at all, but Chewy also seems to have stopped carrying the beets and the mixers as well.
