  1. Late to the party here, but we had the same issue. Rocket could only tolerate all of the richer foods for a month or two before having major issues. We tried them all over time.

The best we have found for him are Precise Foundation Chicken Meal and Rice, and Precise Senior. He just turned 8, and we were seeing occasional soft poops on Foundation after several years on it. The Senior blend seemed to do the trick.

For really sensitive tummies, their Lamb based Sensicare formula works well for some others that we know.

It can be hard to find a Precise dealer in some areas, so order it from Wag or Petflow depending who has the best price.

  2. Get pics of Ernie's injuries no matter how small, as well as your own. Call Animal Control and insist on making a report. This won't be the only time that this dog attacks someone, and the report and pictures may come in handy later.

I would go to the vet for a check over so that the medical care is documented should his punctures cause future problems. Not a whole lot might be able to be done this time, but if there's another incident, you want to be prepared with documentation from the first incident.

Hope you and Ernie are feeling better soon.

  3. See these threads

In the first thread there is a pic of Rocket's turnout area with horse stall bedding to control the mud (pine shavings). This worked well, and since we are getting 3 inches of rain today following the snow melt, i actually put down a couple of bales of shavings about an hour ago.

There is also mention of a mulch call "hog fuel" in one of the threads. Being in Oregon, you can probably get that and have it blown in instead of having to lug bags or wheelbarrows full of the stuff. Unfortunately, there is no company here in Central IL that uses a blower truck for mulch, or that's what i would have used instead of the shavings.

  4. Our vet says that Tylan has fallen out of favor due to side effects. She didn't go into great detail when I asked, but doesn't want me to put Rocket on it unless it's a last resort. i think we are going to have that conversation again on the next visit, since Metonidazole really didn't do much for him this time.

We have the same deal here. Everything will be fine for months, then out of nowhere it takes weeks to get him back to normal. He hates the Rx food that they want him to eat, so we have gone to a "senior" kibble that he's done well on for months, but we still get these "cycles" that we can't seem to get out of.

For bland diet when this happens, I have been feeding the Evanger's Organic Canned Chicken along with mushy cooked rice. The Evanger's is about half the price of the Rx food, and it seems to work. It also beats cooking chicken every 2 days.

  5. We used Eagle Pack when Rocket first came to us. All was good until the company was sold and all of the formulas changed (read ingredients cheapened) causing explosive diarrhea and gastric issues. (Eagle Pack used to be a small family run company with tight quality control, but was sold out to one of the large dog food companies with more cost control than quality control in mind.) That was about 4-5 years ago.

We've been down the road of trying different kibbles, including IAMS. We experienced poor coat and skin flaking on IAMS, but there are numerous folks here who feed IAMs and it works well for their dog. Food is not about your guilt, but rather what works for the dog. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Many greyhounds thrive on IAMS.

Remember that much of the pet food out there is more about marketing and profit than what's good for your pet. We now use Precise because it's what works for Rocket after much trial and error with other brands. Good luck!

  6. It sounds like he is designating that room as his safe spot. Have you tried setting up a crate in another part of the house where you would like him to hang out? You can leave it open and let him come and go as he pleases. Fill it with his blankets, toys etc. Maybe he just needs a spot to call his own....

  7. How long have you had him?

If this behavior is way out of the ordinary, then a vet check might be in order. Things like thyroids that are whacked out or some other level that is off can sometimes make any pet do strange things. All you can really do is check the basics and make sure that all medical stuff is normal and go from there.

If he's only been there a short time, then it might just be adjustment to the new situation. It often takes a year or two before you see the real personality bloom.

Good luck. it's tough when they can't tell you if something is wrong.

  8. Here's a good article regarding this. http://www.drugs.com/article/drug-expiration-dates.html

Most pharmacies automatically put the expiration date on the bottle as 1 year from the date filled. That is not necessarily what the expiration date was on the large bottle that they filled it from.

Hopefully someone here can tell you if any of those have a shorter shelf life, but our vet will usually have me keep things on hand like Metronidazole since we end up using it quite often with Rocket. When I call with an issue, she will usually ask if i have X, Y, or Z on hand and then tell me to use it.

  9. If the wiring is an issue, check out the Solar LED Floodlights at Lowes or Home Depot. No wiring required, motion activated, recharges in the sun, and may give her enough light depending on the size of the area you are trying to light up. I've seen some of these that people have installed on their garage locally, and was surprised at the brightness.

I would stay away from the cheaper units at places like Harbor Freight, as they won't have the output.

When you check the specs, be sure to look at the "Lumens". The higher the number, the brighter the light. Also check out the area it will cover. Most of them will have that info on the box.

  10. Given her weight, 4 cups of that food is probably overfeeding her, which will cause pudding poop. More food doesn't equal more weight. Follow the directions on the bag for her weight as to amount to feed. Also make sure you cut out ALL treats until the pudding is under control, then slow re-introduce them until you learn what she can and cannot tolerate.

I would also only weigh her every 2 or 3 months unless you see her getting noticeably thinner. Weight will fluctuate, and you can't obsess about a couple pounds in the pup's first few weeks in a new home. That's just stress from a whole new world causing that.

If you adjust the amount of food later, only do it in 1/8 to 1/4 cup increments every few weeks.

At this point, you might want to fast her for a day and give the tummy a rest. You'll get dirty looks, but that's better than the runs!

Green bag works for many, but not all. There is no one magic food, only the one that works for your hound, so it takes a little trial and error. As noted above, yogurt can help, but again does not work for all dogs. If we give Rocket yogurt or pumpkin as many will suggest, he gets pudding poops. Again, with add-ins, it's all a matter of finding what works for your hound.

    Good luck!

  11. You might want to stay in the room with him and make sure he doesn't further injure himself. i would gate or block him in the bedroom with you tonight. Don't need him wandering around while loopy.

Can't help with the drug question, but hopefully one of the GT Vets or medical folks will be along shortly.
