  1. How exciting! I can't wait to see pics. I love the black pups.
  2. I'm so sorry you lost your beautiful girl.
  3. Lots of "it's nothing" thoughts for you and your very pretty girl.
  4. Congrats on the upcoming adoption! Greyhounds are such fantastic dogs (although most of us around here tend to be pretty biased ). And good for you for putting so much thought into this ahead of time. I have three greyhounds now and with all of them, I've initially tried to limit their time between bathroom breaks to around four hours. Eventually, he/she should be able to go much longer if needed (my hounds can go up to nine or ten hours at a pinch, although I don't do that to them unless I absolutely HAVE to). Mine all came straight from the track or kennel, though, so it may be different for a hound who comes from a foster home. As for the separation anxiety, you should do a search on this board for "alone training." Taking the time initially to ease them into it is definitely worthwhile. Kongs are a GREAT help with a lot of hounds. Put in a little food in - kibble, yogurt, pumpkin, dog biscuits, peanut butter, whatever you have on hand - and freeze them. Give the Kongs only when the dog is in the crate. I think my hounds actually look forward to my leaving sometimes. Good luck with your adoption. Greytalk is a wonderful resource. We'd LOVE to see photos once you have your hound home.
  5. Gabe will be 8 in July, and his blue muzzle has really started to turn white over the last year. I think he looks distinguished.
  6. Poor soul! Diamond sliced hers up about six months or so ago, running in my parents' yard (they'd had a tree cut down and she ran over the little that was left of the stump). It was HIGH drama around our house for a day or so, but I was amazed at how quickly it healed. We just cleaned it up, used neosporin and vet wrap and a bootie on it when she went outside.
  7. Again, I'm so sorry, Robin. I so wish things had turned out differently.
  8. I'm so, so sorry, Robin. Polli is such a brave, beautiful girl.
  9. Poor baby! That looks painful. Gabe has one weird foot, but his toes/nails aren't twisted like that. He just has two long, flat toes, where he severed tendons in an accident before we adopted him. The nails on that foot do tend to get a little weird if we don't have them clipped regularly, because those nails aren't ground down by walks on cement in the way his other nails are.
  10. That's fantastic. I've also found my "I love my vet." I have to drive about 45 minutes, and he's a bit more expensive than some, but he's worth every penny. (He also LOVES greyhounds and frequently works with one of the groups here).

    Kodi

Thank you for sharing a little bit of Kodi's life with us. What a beautiful and special boy. I'm so, so sorry you had to say goodbye to him.
  12. What a beautiful tribute to a beautiful boy. I'm so sorry for your loss.

    Holly

I hope this wasn't directed to me. I've certainly don't blame Erin. What happened was a tragic accident, and it's something that could've happened even while Holly was waiting for a hauler to come home. When I said "she would've been on her way to Oklahoma," I was just voicing the "what ifs" that have been running through my head. There's a scene in the film Benjamin Button where he runs through all of the tiny little circumstances that had to line up for an accident to occur. If this woman hadn't had to spend five minutes looking for her keys; if this person hadn't stopped to answer the phone, etc. . . I think it's a natural part of grieving to wonder how we might've prevented a tragedy, even where, as here, there was probably nothing anyone could've done. If it did sound judgmental, I apologize. Knowing how much this has hurt DH and me, never having met Holly, I can't imagine what Erin must be feeling. Thank you all very much for the kind thoughts.

    Holly

This week, I've gone from making plans to bring my sweet girl home to finding out she's been killed in a dog fight. Erin messaged me this weekend to let me know that Holly wasn't going to make it as a racer. We were surprised but also excited to meet our pretty girl, so we scrambled to make plans to bring her home. Holly surprised everyone and won her next schooling race by a landslide, so they decided to give her another chance. Apparently, sometime last night/this morning, another dog somehow got his muzzle off and had done too much damage before they could stop him. I can't help thinking that if she hadn't won that race, she'd be on her way to Oklahoma right now. I often asked her trainer to give her kisses and belly rubs for us and to tell her that she had a family waiting who loved her. I hope he did that - I hope she knew she was loved and very much wanted.
  15. Pretty boy. What about Horton - the elephant in Dr. Seuss books?
  16. Diamond's leg quivered like that when she fell a few months ago. My vet said it was just a little muscle strain. Traumel massages and a heating pad (one of the microwavable ones) fixed her right up. I totally understand the microscope - I'm that way with my hounds, too. Hope Miss Polli is feeling better soon.
  17. Diamond is far from a spook, but I think she fits pretty squarely in the "shy" category. If we're around new people (or even family members/friends she's been around quite a bit) she can usually be found hiding behind our legs. After a year of cautious coaxing, FIL has finally gained her trust, which means a lot to him. Shy dogs are really special. Of course, in her "safe zone," at home with us, she's a wild girl.
  18. Cute! She looks like a tiny little thing.
  19. Just checking in to see how Miss Polli is doing tonight. I hope her eating streak has continued.
