  1. Hi Guys..thanks for the info..don't think it's food allergy...we don't feed corn and everything's the same as when she first got here in March..she didn't start licking until July...maybe some type of weird pollen problem???...I'll try the Listerine spray...can I use a OTC human cortisone cream like from CVS ??...I've friends who have a Rottie that has had nervous licking problems and there just doesn't seem to be any end to it..Mango just doesn't seem the type pretty well adjusted as far as we've seen so far..maybe I'll just have to be a 'meanie' and keep her muzzled 24/7 for the next month or so...hate to do it but can't afford to keep going to the vet or even worse go to a vet dermatologist ..let me know on the cortisone issue and thanks again..Macdaddy
  2. My Mango has developed a hot spot on her right front leg...she'll lick it until it's raw. We've been to the vet twice..she was tested (negative) for mites and ring worm and treated twice with oral antibiotics and a cream. I put the muzzle on her and run the course of treatment for 10 days to two weeks and it seems to clear up. A few days later she be right back to licking. I've tried Bitter Apple spray...no luck. The only way to stop the licking is to keep her muzzled and she really DOES NOT like having it on all the time. Of all my dogs and fosters this is my first experience with a hot spot and I'm getting very frustrated. Any suggestions ???
  3. Hi..I've fostered a number of broken leg hounds they all tend to 'favor' the broken limb for some time after the cast/splint is off, pins are out and the leg is healed... my heartdog Mac was a broken hock boy who came to me well after his leg was healed and for quite some time he would favor it...he be playing and rompimg and doing just fine then all of a sudden 'remember' that it was hurt and do a few 'limpies'... ..the application of a little sympathy usually cured it though.. .. I've found that a VERY VERY SLOW walk with the lead very short (like with your hand just a foot or less off the collar)kind of forces them to walk on all fours rather than hop on just three..you can the build up distance slowly over time...

Oh Dear!!...I'm so so sorry for your loss...my heart breaks for you..I was just going through the 'Remembrance' posts to review the posts on my Dessi who I just lost and just now saw the sad news about Sobie..I'm sorry I didn't respond sooner...I love your Dr.Suess quote..I can see the two of them playing at the Rainbow Gate...Bill
  5. My dear sweet, sweet Dessi past away last night...it was very sudden and unexpected...she had displayed no signs of sickness or pain or weakness...in fact yesterday was a perfectly normal day in every way...we got up around 6a.m. she and Mac and foster brother Opa went out to pee and sniff..came in and the kidz all had some liver brownie treats while I had coffee and got dressed..we went for our morning walk..came back ..she ate her regular breakfast...laid around the house all day ...went for another longer walk around 4p.m....she kept up just fine sniffed and peed with the others...everything was just fine enjoyed her regular walk..came back..she ate her dinner just fine...around 6 we were to go out for dinner...put foster Opa in his crate with Dessi and Mac on their pads on either side of him and everybody baby gated in the breakfast nook/dog room..we came home at 8 to find Dessi dead on her pad...there was no sign of a struggle or distress...other than her eyes being open it looked like she just laid down and went to sleep and drifted off... Needless to say we're kinda numb..I knew going in that time would be limited when I adopted a retired broodie but she was only with us for around 18 months or so...she was daddy's little girl...my little snuggle bunny..and she'll be so missed...gotta go now..can't see to type any more...damn those allergies
  6. Dessi my 10 year old retired broodie is our talker....whines,barks and does a cute "whannawnnna-wwhanna-oooo' thing when really excited (she sound like Wookie from Star Wars).....Mac whines to go out and will sometimes (rarely) bark if someone rings the doorbell...he's my strong silent type...
  7. Two plus a foster pup several times a year....
  8. The only major complication I know of after removal of the spleen (in humans) is an increased chance of infections...
  9. They have? ....I've only seen the new stuff and I'm not too thrilled with it...I've fed PP lamb and rice for several years and my guys were fine with it ...the new stuff gave really "soft serve" stools for a while..they've firmed some but still not like what they were with the old formula...wish they'd left well enough alone
  10. I use the 48x33x30 wire crate...we have two dogs and the only time we crate is when we leave them alone for any extended period of time...Dessi goes in the crate which is kept in the breakfast nook off the kitchen and Mac is baby gated loose in the same room with a pad to lay down on next to the crate...they are left loose in the house for short periods of time ...up to an hour...and they sleep on pads next to our bed at night...(well usually.. they've been known to jump up in the bed in the wee hours of the night)
  11. Hi Alan...sounds like you're doing everything right ..although the spray on "plastic skin" seems like a good idea...best wishes for your boy...Bill
  12. My bridge girl Charm died in April 07 after an illness of several months...lots of pain, vomiting and weight loss progressing over time...it was very hard to diagnose(several vets, emergency vets etc. etc. $$$$) but one of the problems found by ultrasound was a large mass ....we thought it was a tumor and made the decision to let her go...turned out it was a very enlarged spleen....the autopsy revealed that her heart was badly scared we don't know why and she was throwing blood clots ...her spleen, liver and kidneys were just full of clots ...in my case there was nothing I could of done ...just something for you to consider ...my best for your friends pup...
  13. My Mac upchucks when ever his tummy is real empty....usually just snotty yellow bile ...so right after wake up and our first "quick out the door and pee in the back yard" it's back inside for 2 liver brownies before our walk ...if I don't do this' about 2/3's of the time he'll heave some where during the walk....except for the plastic leaf sounds similar to what happens to my boy ..if it happens on a regular basis you may want to try slipping your pup a bite or two of some well liked goodie....
  14. Mac and bridge girl Charm were had been in foster for a while and were in perfect shape when I got them retired broodie Dessi had a short stay in foster and had tape worms when she came...
  15. One of each...Mac my 5 year old red male and his new sister,Dessi an 8 year old retired broodie ...plus Mac's bridge sister Charm...we've also fostered several of each....bottom line I love them all
  16. When we lived in Pennsylvania and only had Mac I'd take him to the groomer and they would use the Dremmel and only charge $7.00. I like to trim every two weeks. Out here it's $15.00 and I've added Dessi to the pack so I now do it myself. They tolerate it but DO NOT like having it done....I've always done the nails standing up but thanks to this poll I see that laying on their side might be worth a try. I'm always finding new info here...
  17. One of each here...Mac my first, my heart dog, the greyhound by which all others are judged, a big shy, somewhat aloof, sorta spooky, red fawn male who is and always will be daddy's boy...and Dessie an eight year old red brindle retired brood momma,a talker,a cuddle bunny, somewhat dominant, gotta pee over where he peed, daddy's girl...and my bridge girl Charm...I'll always want one of each..well I WANT several of each but my wife keeps me grounded in reality...
  18. Congrats...and yes these guys WILL win over any possible skeptic to full fledged greyhound ...now you need to to make up for all those long years of waiting!!!
  19. Ditto much of the above....Mac was a broken hock (right rear) boy too...he favored his leg off and on for about 6-8 months after he arrived at our home and the break was "healed over" when we got him...he'd be just fine, even running, and then favor it ....happened less and less over time...I think it was a memory thing..he'd be playing and then stop and think "Oh wait that's suppose to hurt"..."Oh wait it doesn't"...now he's just fine...hopefully this will happen to your pup too and you'll have...
  20. So sorry for your pain...it's so hard to loose your best friend
  21. I know...there's one near Chandler and Alma School in Chandler that will be fairly close to where we'll be living...I plan on taking Mac there once we're settled and I find out what day of the month the M&G is held...we were active with Nittany Greyhounds here and want to be involved with a rescue group there also...
  22. there is one at Chandler and Alma School in Chandler that is near where we'll be living where I plan on taking Mac...will have to find out which day of the month the M&G is held but will be there as soon as we get squared away...
