  1. NEVER MIND! I FINALLY SAW THE WORD "EVENTS" UNDER THE GREYTALK BANNER...HEY, THAT IS SOME TINY FREAKING PRINT! I don't generally think of myself as a stooopid person, but I cannot figure out how or where to sign up for this! I feel like a moron... If anyone reads this, please let me know! : ^ ) Thanks!
  2. Cat food! It's way stinkier than dog food, and most dogs LOVE it. I mean canned. The short answer is when your dog is ill and won't eat, feed her ANYTHING she'll eat. Don't worry if it isn't the tops in nutrition. I second the post on syringe feeding if necessary. I had a cat once that would NOT eat, and the breeder told me he would die if he didn't (he was a kitten) and she told me how to do it. Three days later he woke me up in the middle of the night hollering for his feeding! Good luck!
  3. Don't most female racing hounds take hormones at the track to prevent their heat cycle? It is too dang cold in Illinois to put your dog in the garage. Get her some lady dog diapers, stick a human incontinence pad in them, and frankly, I'd look for a new vet it getting you Sudafed was too much trouble for your current vet. You can get it at the drugstore--you just have to sign for it these days (just in case you want it for making crystal meth, I guess).
  4. That's a GREAT link! I use a Dremel, and love it, but she presents some excellent information and a different technique that I can't wait to try! One tip I read on the Dremel site is that when you have to change out the sanding band, they can be REALLY hard to get on, so use a tiny dab of Vaseline on the post before you attempt to slide the new band on. Also, don't neglect to twist the screw end of the post (the thingy that holds the heads).
  5. Remember, Chorney more than likely relies on her sense of smell and her sight a LOT, so to HER, not hearing so well is probably not that bad. The dog my family had when I was a little girl (many, many years ago!) was stone deaf, and as happy as could be! He couldn't hear anything except my father's whistle--the kind where you stick your fingers in your mouth. But I swear, he could hear a potato chip land on the carpet ... Hugs to Chorney, she's beautiful!
  6. My vet takes my pets to "the back." It doesn't seem like a problem to me. If I felt she was doing something bad to them, I'd go somewhere else! I'd enjoy being present, but I always figured they have their reasons.
  7. Frannie looks a lot like my George, except the white on her face! Must see if they are related! Welcome.
  8. I would not trust the quality control on fish pill for any reason for my dog. I've invested way to much time, energy, and love into my dog to risk putting junk intended to be disolved in a fish tank in his body! You need to be able to afford basic veterinary care when you own a dog. There are safer ways to cut back on costs!
  9. Don't worry about it. Worst case scenario--the dogs barfs it up.
  10. I found when George had a cut it took a lot longer to heal than my old dog would have. I don't know why--but Greyhounds have such weird, dry delicate skin! Have you heard of the wonderous EMT gel and/or spray? It's kind of like liquid bandage. It was suggested to me, and seemed to work really well! Cut looks OK to me!
  11. If your dog has a tendency to "oyster boogers," (I loved that description!) you can get a tube of eye antibiotic ointment from your vet to have on hand. Usually two or three days of those clears it right up. I have a Siamese cat who has chronic eye boogers, and I ALWAYS have some on hand. George has the typical dark crusty boogers. Nothing serious. It's funny though--when I clean them off, the tear duct area (if he were a person) is all pink skin, so he actually looks better from a distance with his boogers!
  12. Poor baby! That's the fourth different poster I've seen with that same blue/brown Costco dog bed! Saw it myself three days ago... I hope your guy feels better soon.
  13. Of the three family members of mine who had Lyme disease, only ONE had any rash at all...
  14. I also read that using Peroxide on wounds is no longer recommended. I got myself a nice bottle of Betadine (veterinary formula, vs. human, but I suspect there is no diff!) and use that instead. I think that the Peroxide not only stings more, it does something to the tissue--but as someone else said, no big deal! My limited experience tells me that that sort of scrape/cut/boo boo is VERY COMMON with these thin skinned houndies! I could not believe the damage George did to himself FALLING DOWN on the stairs! That when I was told about the EMT gel and/or spray. I think every new adoptee should be given a tube! Omaha Vaccine (www.omahavaccine.com) is a good source of really reasonably priced supplies!
  15. Deer Miss Polli, I am verry sorry yu are having the pain. Would a Georgie smooch make you feel a little bit bettah? Feel bettah soon, George in Noo England
  16. Wouldn't changing the bag and putting the used one in a trash bag accomplish the same thing without having to buy a flea collar to destroy?
  17. Three members of my family have had Lyme disease. The symptoms would not, I don't think, appear that quickly. I hope the vet showed you how to remove a tick yourself. Removing it as soon as possible is important.
  18. Welcome! Can you PLEASE explain that very mysterious line in your .sig below the photos? It's going to drive me nuts if you don't!
  19. Good luck--and since no one else seems to have mentioned it, the dogs will most likely NOT be housebroken when you get them...unless they've been in a foster home for a while. You specifically mentioned that when you mentioned puppies, so I thought I'd point that out! It's not a big deal, particularly if you're going to have a fenced yard.
  20. If you want a dog your kids can play ball with, etc., I personally do not feel like a Greyhound is a logical choice. It's a perfect choice for ME, but I grew up with dogs--we had more dogs than kids in fact. And a dog that, generally, won't fetch, isn't a good swimmer, can't be let off leash except in a fenced area (or, apparently, most of Europe (that's a joke!)) just doesn't seem like a really fun choice for a family with two QUITE young kids. Just my two cents. For me, a middle aged single gal, a Greyhound is perfect. Sleeps a lot, happy to take long leash walks, does not want to play ball like my old dog did, wouldn't know what a Frisbee was if I gave him a dozen--it works. If you just want a greyhound because you want to "save" a dog, there are plenty of great companions at the local animal shelter--Lab mixes abound!--that also need saving that might be better playmates for your kids.
  21. I've had cortisone shots myself--and let me tell you--they're a freaking frackin' miracle. I have had shoulder surgery twice, and really need a third to remove part of my collar bone. The shots (on me!) didn't feel as if they did much for about 24 hours, but afterward, I got approximately 3 mo. relief from CONSTANT pain from them. For severe arthritis, studies (sorry, can't quote them right now...) show glucosamine of little to no value. Once the cartilidge is basically GONE, there isn't much you can do except manage the pain. I have arthritis in my knee, hip, spine, shoulder, and hand. It's the garden variety arthritis, not rhuematoid, and there really isn't anything they can do for you except give you good medication. Personal experiences only--not a doctor or vet!
  22. Why would anyone flame you? But you sort of answered your own question when you say, basically, "other than limping its not bothering him." Limping means it IS bothering him! The vet will probably just give you something for the pain and tell you to rest the dog as much as you can. Which is pretty much what you did! These things happen.
  23. Yes, yes, yes to Panacur despite the fecal results. My boy had persistent diarrhea off the track for two months. All stool checks were normal. I had read that if your dog has the big D off the track, even if results of tests are normal, dose him with Panacur. So I told the vet, she said, "Can't hurt!" and we did it. Went away, hasn't come back! George does get icky diarrhea whenever I take him on a greyhound walk with other houndies, so clearly he has an emotional component to his runs! You don't even need a prescription for Panacur, and in fact you can get in on Amazon.com for a really good price. You have to mix and match the packet sizes to get the right dose for the right weight. Panacur D is what she gave me, and charged me 3X the amount...
  24. If things are going IN, they need to come out -- one way or the other. So if the dog is not feeling well, and hasn't pooped... You didn't mention that, and how did you know your dog had a "stomach ache." I assume you gave it oatmeal thinking that would help. Generally, if a dog has an upset stomach, you don't want to keep putting food in it. But you specifically said "stomach ache." Details????
  25. OK! Here is what you do! Go back to your Photobucket album. Click the "direct link." You'll see it says "copied" when you do it. Come back to G.W. When you're typing your message, click on the little icon above the compose message window that looks faintly like a picture -- it's the fifth choice in. In the upper left hand corner of your monitor, a little box will appear for you to paste your Photobucket code into! Just click right on top of the code fragment that will be there, then select paste. I hope that helps!
