We have our Belle on Phenobarbital (1 grain) my vet does not want her on anything else yet. She had 3 in 6 weeks and was on the meds for a month did blood work and more in 6 months. On April 15 the day of her last seizure they did a full blood work up to get a base line. If you search here on this message board there is a lot of information on seizures and even search under epilepsy.

Snowy
in Remembrance
For you Hilda and I hope it brings you some comfort
A SPECIAL GIFT
You're giving me a special gift,
So sorrowfully endowed,
And through these last few cherished days,
Your courage makes me proud.
But really, love is knowing
When your best friend is in pain,
And understanding earthly acts
Will only be in vain.
So looking deep into your eyes,
Beyond, into your soul,
I see in you the magic, that will
Once more make me whole.
The strength that you possess,
Is why I look to you today,
To do this thing that must be done,
For it's the only way.
That strength is why I've followed you,
And chose you as my friend,
And why I've loved you all these years...
My partner 'til the end.
Please, understand just what this gift,
You're giving, means to me,
It gives me back the strength I've lost,
And all my dignity.
You take a stand on my behalf,
For that is what friends do.
And know that what you do is right,
For I believe it too.
So one last time, I breathe your scent,
And through your hand I feel,
The courage that's within you,
To now grant me this appeal.
Cut the leash that holds me here,
Dear friend, and let me run,
Once more a strong and steady dog,
My pain and struggle done.
And don't despair my passing,
For I won't be far away,
Forever here, within your heart,
And memory I'll always stay.
I'll be there watching over you,
Your ever faithful friend,
And in your memories I'll run,
...a young dog once again.

Thank you. Her first and last seizures were doozies. The first one she was in the closest and I thank doG as the other greys might of really hurt her - she fell behind a gate and we were woke up with the comotion. The last one she was in her crate and grabbed the side of the crate with her mouth and there was a pool of blood on the floor. Vet examined her and said she had bruised her gums other than that and being beat up, blood shot eyes she was fine...

Yes we hope so.
First one about 1 years ago, then 3/1, 4/2 and then 4/15. We are sitting with fingers crossed

Just received a call from Belle's doctor and her phenobarbital levels are right where they want them to be. They will continue her on 1 grain pheno and will re-test her in 6 months. I am not hoping that this dose will keep her seizure free, her last seizure was on April 15. I am one happy momma

Mine also are on heart worm preventative year round

I am in a tizzy about the HW testing.
When I was first introduce to HW meds 6 months on 6 months off then blood test
then they came up with HW meds year round no blood test
Now every vet has a different opinion of blood testing from 1 year, 18 months, 2 years. One vet in WV says you do not need the meds but test every year.
Which one is right???

Belle's last seizure was April 15 and so far no seizures. They have her on 1 grain Phenobarbital 2 x day and they will be doing blood work on Thursday. How often should it be done? They said it had to be done 6 hours after the dose so they have scheduled it for 3 pm we usually dose her around 10 am.

This was sent to me when we lost our first greyhound Shadow Do
The Spirit Of A Greyhound
I was standing on a hillside in a field of blowing wheat,
and the spirit of a Greyhound was lying at my feet.
He looked at me with kind dark eyes, ancient wisdom shining through.
in the essence of his being, I saw the love there too.
His mind did lock upon my heart as I stood there on that day,
and he told me of this story about a place so far away.
As I stood upon that hillside in a field of blowing wheat,
in a twinkling of a second his spirit left my feet.
His tale did put my heart at ease, all my fears did fade away
about what lay ahead of me on another distant day.
"I live among God's creatures now in the heavens of your mind,
so do not grieve for me, my friend as I am with my kind.
My collar is a rainbow's hue, my leash a shooting star.
my boundaries are the Milky Way where I sparkle from afar.
There are no pens or kennels here for I am not confined,
but I'm free to roam God's heavens among the Greyhound kind.
I nap the day on a snowy cloud gentle breezes rocking me,
and dream the dreams of earthlings, and how it used to be.
The trees are full of liver treats, and tennis balls abound,
and milk bones line the walkways just waiting to be found.
There even is a ring set up, the grass all lush and green;
and everyone who gaits around becomes the Best of Breed.
For we're all winners in this place; we have no faults, you see.
and God passes out those ribbons to each one, even me.
I drink from waters laced with gold, my world a beauty to behold;
and wise old dogs do form my pride to amble at my very side.
At night I sleep in angel's arms, her wings protecting me,
and moonbeams dance about us as stardust falls on thee.
So when your life on earth is spent and you stand at Heaven's gate,
have no fear of loneliness-- for here, you know, I wait."

In USA Weekend a magazine we got with our Sunday Paper thered is an Article by Dennie Huges named "GRIEVING FOR A LOST PET IS NECESSARY" and it is helpful. There is also a number in the article at the University of California Davis, toll free Pet Loss Support Hot-line at 800-5651526.
Hope this information helps I have not called it but will keep it on hand.
To anyone that has lost a pet I can understand your loss as I have been there quite a few times and I cry with you and remember my own....

Check your baby all over especially the very warm places, under the arm pits, belly, etc. I found a tick on Jams a few years ago around her privates. Always check between the toes and the ears they do have a little flap on the ears and I have found them there.
You are in the South? If so you have to be extra careful
-
Flea and Tick meds are usually by prescription and what is reccomended by your vet. Ticks should be taken care of as they can cause medical problems. A tick bourne disease can be fatal if not treated. Pull all ticks off that you find and put them in alchol to kill them. A breeder in FL told me to do a light coat of vaseline on the ears and to use bio spot but then again see what your vet says to use.
Heart worm meds should be given per your vet. I give mine theirs monthly and they also have to be bought by prescription. You can go on line to some vet supplies (I use KV Vet) and get these meds fairly reasonable just get the prescriptions off of you vet.
Good Luck with you new baby

I am so sorry for your loss - we have lost three but not as suddendly as you did. Phawn was diagnosed with osteo and we only had two short weeks before we had to make a very painful decision. Shadow was fine and got up in the morning and went down she had broken her leg for no apparent reason (they called it a pathological fx) we rushed her to the vet and we were told that they could set it but it probably would not heal so again it was a painful decision to let her go. He did tell us that he thought it was cancer - she had a toe amputated a few years earlier due to Fibrosarcoma. the Penny who was rescued here through GreyTalk who passed away from anesthesia.
so I can say I know how it feels to lose a sweet baby.
doG bless you and please know there are a lot of us who care and are shedding tears with you.

Thank you he really had me scared the way he was acting but I am so thankful he is back to his old spiffy self even if he does love to put his needle nose between my boobies and rub back and forth..

I was a happy mommy this morning Penske is back to his normal self. he ate all his breakfast, his nose is cold and wet and he is back to being a leaping lizard. Greeted me normally this am and again when we came back from shopping. he loves to bounce back in the house when he goes out to potty and has started back up doing this.
I be one happy mommy today

Penske is still not himself and only ate about 1/2 his usual breakfast. Am feeding a little late this evening so I will see how he will eat then
-
He is pretty lethargic and has not eaten anything, is drinking water and going to the bathroom. I am not going to worry about my big boy yet a meal or two won't hurt him.

I just brought my velcro boy home and vet was very please with his teeth. No fractures and no disease of the gums. Was a very good patient and they did not crate him but had him in a run. She said hopefully he will not be needing them cleaned for quite a while..I do believe he is upset with us.

Can pick up my velcro boy at 4:30 don't have anything else right now as they just finished up with him
