    Remembering Ivey

Beautiful Stacey. I remember when you posted pictures of Ivey, shortly after she came to you, dull coated and skinny. As the weeks went by and you posted more pictures, we saw how your love and care transformed her into a, sleek, black beauty. I'm so sorry she's gone. I'm glad she had you.

    Penny

Oh Diane. I'm so sorry you've lost your little Penny. I remember when you adopted her. She was so lucky to have been with you, even for such a short time. You made a difference to her.

  9. Oh, that precious little face...I'm so sorry.
  10. I've been cleaning out my bookmarks and came across this. Just thought I'd share. Canines in Crisis
  11. Deb, I believe in being honest and not telling more information than you need to. You might say something like, "Remember how Roo's paw was hurting and hurting so bad? Well, the Dr. found out that Roo had a bad sickness that couldn't get better. Lloyd and I decided that we didn't want Roo to hurt anymore, so we let the Dr. give Roo some medicine that helped Roo to die very gently and not be scared. It didn't hurt, and Mom and Lloyd were there with him." You could explain that this is something we do for our animals, not to our animals, when they're too sick or hurt to get better. Remember, any questions Shawna may ask, only need to be answered as far as you think she can understand. I'd steer away from saying that Roo was "put to sleep". Kids can misunderstand this, and mistake dying for sleeping. You might want to explain that we don't do this to humans, so that Shawna doesn't get frightened that it could happen to her or you. This is such a tough time for you and I'm so sorry you need to do this. I know you'll say the right things.
  12. Hoo hoo (noun) - Highly scientific, technical term for the canine (particularly, Greyhound) penis. Usually found in the genital area, also known as "down there" of the male canine. In the female gender this "area" is sometimes known as the "wee wee". :lol
  13. :lol :lol I'm sorry I don't mean to laugh, but I can hear the panic in your post! The "flushing" was something one of our members had to do when her Grey had a sheath infection. It's not something you'll probably ever have to do...if you're lucky. I can just see you picturing us all "flushing" our Greys "down there" and not letting you in on the secret!
  14. I think you're talking about the "bulbous glandis". This is located on either side of the base of the "hoo hoo". During mating, this swells and is what helps to "lock" the male and the female together. I've noticed this on Dash too. I've also noticed it seems to appear larger at different times, especially if he has to urinate. I don't think you've got cause to worry, but if it does seem to be getting larger, you might talk to the vet about it.
  15. Howdy All! The first draft of the Greytalk Veterinarian List is complete! Below is a state by state list of vets that you, the members of Greytalk, have used and recommend. We hope you will find it useful. If you wish to add a vet, please post the information in the original "Greyhound Vet List" thread, that is also pinned. Alabama Arizona Dr. Rhonda Cutforth AMEC Small Animal Hospital 1834 W. Dunlap Phoenix, AZ 85021 (602) 943-3463 Ofc. Hrs: M-F 7-7 Sat. 8-3 Such a sweetie! This was first my sister's vet, and I drove many miles to get to her. Dr. C put our grey, Millie, to sleep, and afterwards, she sent her condolences in the form of a book on grief. Everyone in her office signed it. After I wrote a thank you letter to tell her of Millie's exploits (Dr. C was our dog's vet only during her last couple of years), she made a donation to the Phoenix Zoo in our dog's memory. That's really going above and beyond. ------------------ Arkansas California In SF East Bay: Montclair Vet Clinic Dr. Lopez or Dr. Richter 1961 Mountain Blvd. Oakland, CA 94611 510-339-8600 Hours: M-F: 8am-6pm; Sat: 8am-1pm The Montclair Vet Clinic has been around for about 40 years. They have at least 10 rescue greyhounds as patients as well as whippets, afghans, and other sighthounds. Dr. Richter obtained his degree in Florida and saw many greyhounds. Both vets that I have dealt with there have a very good bedside manner. For an emergency vet, I use Pet Emergency Services 1048 University Avenue Berkeley, CA 94710 510-548-6684 Tiffany has received excellent care at Emergency Services for her too many accidental lacerations (unfortunately, they have seen her often enough to recognize her). When Tiff's eyelid was shredded in a dogfight on a Sunday night, the vet was on the telephone consulting with an vetinary opthamoligist at U.C. Davis Vet School. She cleaned up the wound, put Tiff on grey-safe painkillers, and scheduled the delicate reconstructive surgery for Tiffany at UC Davis for the next morning. They and are open at nights and weekends, when regular vet clinics are closed. And, if you are in the Sacramento area, you cannot go wrong with the UC Davis Vet Teaching Hospital. Those people are amazing. The general number for the small animal clinic is 530-752-1393. ---------------------- Colorado Alameda East Veterinary Hospital (of Emergency Vets on Animal Planet) 9870 East Alameda Ave. Denver, Colorado 80231 Open 24 hours a day phone: 303-366-2639 The resident vets are Greyhound savvy. We've also seen and gotten good care and advice from Dr. Wimmer, Dr. Long, and Dr. Jallen. This is a large, busy practice but that gives the staff lots of experience -- you've got it, they've seen it before. And wait times are usually quite short -- I don't think it's ever taken me more than an hour from checking in to walking out the door. ------------------- Indiana Cincinnati, Ohio and South Eastern Indiana Veterinary Wellness Center Robert J. All 3 vets there are good. It's an hour away, so I usually take my dogs to the vet here in town, but I did take Sonic down there for a 2nd opinion and really liked them. My vet has limited grey experience, but I do like him because he is very willing to read up on greys and call other vets if he has questions. We have found their fee schedule for treatment and medications to be VERY reasonable. We drive about 20 miles to take our Greyhounds there. "Dr. Joyce" treats all of the GPA/Southern Ohio Valley chapter's new dogs. Very good bedside manner, very interested in most up to date treatments and pulling out all the stops to help your dog. Fairly expensive, but adopters/gh owners receive a 5% discount. A less expensive alternative (and the one we usually use) is: Dr. Varnes Affordacare Veterinary Clinic 10617 UNIVERSITY AVE NE # 2 Blaine, MN 612-754-2381 They are very affordable and what they lack in bedside manner, they more than make up for in speed, efficiency and attention to detail. Dr. Varnes is honest and willing to take time to answer questions. They will usually fit us in even when we don't have an appt, or just stop by, or have an emergency. They do the basics, and don't offer much in the way of whistles, bells and chimes, but if he feels more is needed, he willingly offers referrals and suggestions. We've never had a problem though, that he couldn't handle in the 10 years we've been bringing our dogs and cats to him. Again, they don't spend time ooohing or aaahing, and are pretty much all business, but for the prices they charge (less than half of most vets), I can afford to do the oohing and aahing myself. -------------------- Mississippi Missouri Banfield Animal Hospital Kayla Peterson, DVM (only) 9201 Hillcrest Ave. Kansas City, MO 64138 816-761-3800 T 9-7, W&Th 7:30-7, F 9-7, S 9-6 ----------------------- Everything Pets Animal Hospital Dr. Christine R. 16. Howdy All! The Greytalk Veterinarian List is below! Below is a state by state list of vets that you, the members of Greytalk, have used and recommend. We hope you will find it useful. We're asking, if you have a recommendation for a Grey savvy vet, that you post the following information (make sure the vet is not already listed or in the posts above yours): Name of vet practice Name of vet Street address of office City, State, Zip Telephone number Office hours and emergency We will try to fit in any comments you may have, as to why you recommend your particular vet. Please keep it simple. Please do not ask for vet recommendations in this thread. If you did not find one in your area and wish to post, please start a separate thread for it.
  17. I'm so sorry to read this sad news about Maggie. My heart goes out to you.

    Floydieboy

I would like to thank Janet (Floydieboy) for her suggestion that Jeff add a forum like this to the board. So many of you have gone through the pain of losing a Grey and dealing with that loss can be such a difficult thing. We hope, that having a forum here at Greytalk, where we can discuss our feelings of grief and loss among "friends", will help ease the pain that some of us may experience. Thanks also to Jeff (Grey Dad). You're a generous guy!
