  1. Red Badger ran way more than 19 races. He ended his career at B'ham but started at Lincoln with a trip to Victoryland in between.

Here ya go. Greyhound data is nowhere near a complete data base.

    http://www.trackinfo.com/greymatter/

Is there a key somewhere to help me decipher what each of the columns in that listing means? The date column is obvious, and I guess BM is Birmingham, but the rest is pretty opaque to someone not well-versed in racing...

After the date is the race he was in N = Night and X = matinee

The code for the track. BM B'ham, VL Victoryland and LI Lincoln

Then the distance of the race. 5/16ths of a mile

    The track condition. F = fast, M = Mud S = Slow

    The winning time

Your dogs weight for this race

The numbers in bold is the race

1st number is the box he was in

2nd number is his position at the break as the box opens

3rd number is his position as he heads down the backstretch, if he was in the lead there will be a number that shows how many lenghts he was in front

4th number is his position as he rounds the last turn heading for the finish line, again if he is in front there is another number telling how many lenghts he is in front

5th number is where he finished in the race and the follong number is how many lenghts behind the winner he was. If he won the race that number is how far in front of the 2nd place dog he was.

Next is his time of the race.

Then the odds he went off at

Next is the comment as far as how he ran in the race.

Then the grade of the race. At B'ham they would be A,B,C,D,E The SC is a mixed grade race. You can only mix from one grade lower so those races had C and D dogs in them

Then the first three dogs in order of finish. If your dog is in the first 3 they don't put him in and they put the 4th place finisher in.

There is a lot here and I hope it helped a little.

  2. Congratulations on adopting Badger.

To give you little more background, he actually ran at Lincoln, Victoryland and B'ham a total of 61 times. Lincoln was one of our better tracks and he had trouble there and couldn't get out of maiden and was moved to VL. He only ran a few times there and was moved to B'ham.

He wasn't a very good breaker, but, at times he would finish and either win or be in the money.

Not all tracks report to GD and there is a second site called greymatter that sometimes has more information. On GreyMatter if you click on Dog/Raceline Viewer and then type your pups name in you can see his lines.

I guess I type to slow. LOL

  3. hello,

I am thinking about taking my greyhound Leyton to lure coursing. On the 18th of April we have in Slovenia 2nd National COURSING

I have read about lure coursing on a few different sites, forums,... And I found this web site, which tells you how to prepare your ex-racer to coursing:

    My link

I was really happy to read this and to read your experience and opinions about it.

I am quite interested in it and I hope my hound will enjoy it.

Today I posted a question on forum of Slovenian association Slovenian Sighthound World if anyone is going to lure coursing and I was shocked!!! A few people literally went mad about me even thinking about it.

    These are reasons why:

    - adopted galgos and ex-racers should never ever in their life compete once again

-coursing is a competition and it encourages their hunting instinct and their wish to compete

-only healthy hounds can compete (I Agree), because we don`t know if our ex racers had any injuries

-they have been abused and they can still suffer about it, they still didn`t forget about it

-they are not trained corectly for lure coursing

-the basic principle of adopting a greyhound/galgo is that we must not do anything that remembers them about their past, they must not do anything that they have done when they were competing (so, I guess, no more running?????)

-after they do coursing they need 6 days so that the amount of adrenalin falls to its normal level

-for galgos lure coursing is absurdity, because galgos are much more smarter and they don`t just run straight after the lure, but they find the fastest and shortest way to catch it. Lure coursing is not for galgos, because it is not natural and galgos are made for natural style of hunting.

-hounds get crazy when they see lure coursing

-the essence of life with a hound is that we try to minimize their hunting instinct, we must not encourage it.

-lure coursing does not make hound happy (oh my god!!!)

-things which are predicted, planned and required from greyhound, does not make them happy and satisfied

    Huh... :huh

I would be really happy if someone who takes his hounds to lure coursing or someone who knows a lot about coursing, answer me if all this reasons are true/not true and why.

I was really shocked when I read answers to my question, because my opinion is that lure coursing makes hounds happy.

Some people are anti racing no matter what kind of racing.

  4. Hopefully, some of the people that are in the kennenls will chime in on the corns with the dogs at the tracks.

I don't believe it's a major thing with the track dogs. I have heard someone say that is because if they were there they are probably getting worn dowm because they run in the sand so much, unlike your adopted dogs that don't get that opportunity.

Does anyone have a pup that couldn't make the track, so less than 36 months old, that got corns at an age under 4, or are most of these dogs over 5 or 6?

I will be interested to see the percentage with a larger number of dogs being treated.

I think even a 60 or 70 percent cure rate would be great.

I can understand people being skeptical and having a wait and see attitude, but, one person that attacked you on AG had the cure for next to nothing and when I asked him to post it, well we are still waiting.

  5. Hi Heather,

The best dog I ever owned broke his toe, non weight bearing, and we had it removed. He was in AA at Wheeling and 6 weeks after the operation he was back winning AA races. He never missed a beat.

Part of that six weeks was because he had to be worked back into racing shape and then had to school back on. If he were a pet that time frame would be much shorter.

RACING GREAT OZZIE THE MAN PASSES AWAY

West Palm Beach, Fl. - Palm Beach Kennel Club racing sensation and a fan favorite of Greyhound enthusiasts around the world are mourning the loss of one of the sport’s finest athletes, Ozzie The Man.

Ozzie passed away from osteosarcoma last Saturday morning, November 7. He was six years old.

“Ozzie was one in a million.”, said his adopted “mom” Kristin Block. “The amount of fans he had was unreal. Australian papers even wrote about all of his races. I really miss him. He was way to young to die.”

    He will be missed.

The overused and abused phrase “There will be never be another like him” absolutely applies to Ozzie. His career accomplishments (listed below) are impeccable. Often, after one of his many victories, kennel operator and trainer Tim Cahill would bring him into the track so his adoring fans could actually meet this friendly, gracious and courteous speed ball in person.

The sadness will stay with us for a while. Soon, broken hearts and souls will heal, and for the most part, the happy and glorious moments will rise to the surface.

Our condolences go out to Kristin, Tony and Dottie Morris, Tim Cahill, Cindy O’Connor and to racing fans around the world who had the privilege of following Ozzie’s amazing exploits.

    Rest in peace our friend.

  7. Hi Trudy and Jeff,

    The new forum looks great.

I know some things take time in such a big undertaking and this may be one of them, is the forum column going to be used at some time in the future?

Using the "view new topic" link.

  8. Nice ramp and it looks pretty solid.

Are the slats screwed on from the bottom? If they are I would take them off and drill two or three small holes near the bottom to let the rain water drain. I would also do as you suggested and sand and either stain or just clear coat them with polyurethane.

Nice gift from your dogsitter and her neighbor.

    Dick
