  1. The container I use is big enough to fit the whole bag in. I just cut the top of the bag off. This way I have all the info and the container stays clean.

This is what I do also. If you pour the food from the bag into the container and then don't wash the container on a regular basis, you can contaminate the new food or have it become rancid. This way, the food stays in it's original bag - making it easy to check codes, etc. if necessary. ;)

  2. Yep. I called the vet this morning when they opened. He said there is a possibility that the zyrtec could have caused an upset tummy, so he is suggesting trying claritin instead and watching her for a few days. Interestingly, the zyrtec did nothing for her in terms of reducing the itchiness. She went right on nibbling and licking. I don't know how long it takes for Clartin to kick in, so we shall see. I also sprayed her legs with something for hot spots and she seems pretty calm right now and not nibbling or licking.

What happened to good old reliable Benadryl. Why Zyrtec or Claritin?? :huh

For some dogs w/ severe allergies, Benadryl doesn't work. Dogs are suppose to get 1mg per lb of body weight. Circe was pushing up 3 mg per lb of body weight and it wasn't even touching her itching. Also Zyrtec and Claritin last longer w/ fewer pills than Benadryl.

She has been on Zyrtec for over 2 months and her hair has grown back in and she is not itching nearly as bad. She has seasonal allergies and our pollen counts have been thru the roof. I also have allergies and ended up with a sinus infection and now bronchitis. So while we can't breathe, dogs itch.

Good to know for future reference. Thanks. ;)

  4. We have a 9-year old male greyhound that has a swollen rear paw; I have no idea what happened to it, but he seems to have scraped it, and he was licking it. No sign of infection, but it's warm to the touch, and about double its usual size. The lower leg is swollen, too. He's been muzzled, but managed to get it to bleed on the one knuckle, so we had to bandage it.

So far, we've been soaking it 1-2x a day in warm water with Epsom salts. He doesn't protest when we manipulate it, so it doesn't appear to be painful. I can't find anything in there, although we've had foxtails in the yard before I can't find any this time of the year so I don't think that's it.

Again, there's no sign of infection, but I don't know what could be causing this. Any suggestions? This has been going on 3-4 days now, with the swelling for about 2-1/2 days.

Possible spider bite. I would have a vet check it out.

  5. A sincere thanks to all who have responded to this posting. My family and I appreciate your prayers, thoughts, concerns, personal stories and suggestions. One said it well that her grandfather passed from Mesothelioma and really...there is NO cure. All of the tests in the world will show nothing any different than what we have already seen. Xrays are Xrays!

Today our sweet boy is doing okay...he is eating, still loves kicking out the rabbits and letting us know of the deer and the foxes who live in our woods. He is still taking the nasty medicines, but is happy and yesterday soaked up some vitamin D on our deck with his sister, Cleo, our other greyhound, both enjoying the coming of Spring!!! We take one day at a time and enjoy the short time we have together and realistically that should go for ALL of us...Life is very short in human and dog years!

    Thanks again...will keep you posted.

Continued prayers for Mac. My SIL could not believe this when I told her about it. So very sad. :( Hugs to you, Mac and your family.

  6. Not toget off subject about Mac. Donna- how your SIL got the MESO (as we call it in the insurance industry) is bystander exposure. She got it from being around the asbestos not actually working with it. Any time the asbestos is disturbed there is achance for people to get any type of asbestos related disease. I handle cases every day (I am an environmental claim adjuster) in which people were exposed to asbestos. Women who washed their husband's clothing got MESO from it (shaking the clothing out) it is so sad.

I understand that. Unfortunately, everyone who worked in that warehouse has died or has lung cancer now. :(

  7. I am sooooooo sorry to hear this. Unbelieveable!!!!! :o Give him lots of love. :grouphug

My 51-year old SIL was diagnosed with Mesothelioma in December and could not ever remember being exposed to asbestos. Found out she was working for her father one summer and a co-worker was cutting sheets of asbestos on a regular basis about 10 feet from the desk she was sitting at - 30 years ago.

  8. My regular vet due to the fact that my Ami needed the tramadol before he died sold us a bottle of 1000 of 50mg. So I am set on Tramadol. The combination the ortho gave was

Previcox 1/2 of a 227mg a day. Up to 150 tramadol three times a day, and one Fosimax a day. He did say to follow up with an oncologist and gave me a #. She is in wonderful spirits right now, kissing me wanting to play. It is me who is a wreck. I haven't stoppred crying since I saw the x-ray yesterday. My head hurts, my eyes are swollen. I just lost my Amadeus in December and now my Bella Rose. I am praying for a very long time with her but will be realistic.

Thanks for all the well wishes and the info. This is a wonderful place to get wonderful information.

Sheila, Red has been on 1/2 of a 227mg Previcox for the last 6 years. Fortunately, this is for severe arthritis that he got at a young age. Given with food it is has been very easy on his stomach and I've had no liver issues. He also gets 1/2 of a 50mg tramadol twice a day.

Praying that Bella can be kept pain-free for a long time. :grouphug:grouphug:grouphug
