Greyhound growls/reactive at other greyhound

Recommended Posts

Hi, a newbie from uk here! I have a 4 and a half year old female grey. Ive haf her 1 and half year, shes the only pet in the household.

She's generally anxious dog outside the house and she has been quite reactive to other dogs (which I have seen a behaviourist  in the past for) but she's even reactive to other greyhounds she meets! She growls/snarls/ barks/lunges if she sees another grey or meets them at greyhound walks. Quite frankly it's embarrassing!! She is ok once she starts walking with them though...she is more relaxed with them at the end of the walk.

Had anyone else's grey got this problem?!

It sounds like she still needs socialising and as you say she is more relaxed with them at the end of the walk. Are there any other greyhound owners near you so you can walk your hounds together regually?

Hi. It seems that group walks are not your dog's cup of tea. Being somewhat anxious around other dogs, including greyhounds, is normal for some dogs and it may always be an issue to some degree. I'd suggest do your dog a favour and give it a rest from having to deal with other dogs for a while. When you saw a behaviourist in the past, what did they advise and what did you do with their advice?  Both of my last two dogs have been anxious around other dogs, especially on-leash. Great dogs that just needed some extra space to prevent on-leash anxiety from being an issue (most of the time). Cheers.

My Johnny was like that--he had a very, very few dogs that he would not react to. He hated getting in the sniffing scrums that greyhounds love, it was way too much for him and I think he felt trapped. I brought him to as many walks and meet & greets as I could, he would stand the whole time, but he did find a few calmer "buddies" that we could hang out with. He was very comfortable with GT'er LBass' Spirit, they were like two little nervous peas in a pod. Spirit is not a pushy boy, and that is what Johnny liked.

I got Eugene (AKA Gino) in March, and he is like Spirit, a kind of Beta Boy. The only time Johnny really snarked at Eugene is when they first met, and when Eugene thought Johnny was the cats, sneaking up to steal his food. They got along so well for the three short months they were together. They even shared a hotel room with two senior girls at Mountain Hounds.

Current Crew: Gino-Gene-Eugene! (Eastnor Rebel: Makeshift x Celtic Dream); Fuzzy the Goo-Goo Girl (BGR Fuzzy Navel: Boc's Blast Off x Superior Peace); Roman the Giant Galoot! (Imark Roman: Crossfire Clyde x Shana Wookie); Kitties Archie and Dixie

Forever Missed: K9 Sasha (2001-2015); Johnny (John Reese--Gable Dodge x O'Jays) (2011-19); the kitties Terry and Bibbi; and all the others I've had the privilege to know

Hi thanks for the replies. When we initially got her She was hardly ever reactive to other dogs - it gradually got worse over time. And yes I think it's because so many off lead dogs run towards/ approaches her and as she is always on the lead she finds t hat really scary and off-putting...

The behaviourist suggested I do desensitization and counter conditioning - e.g. Giving her treats as soon as she sees another dog so that she will learn that other dogs = yummy treats ! This doesn't always work as she can get fixated on the other dog as soon as it's in her sight and does not even listen to me!!

Recently I walked her with a friend 's off-lead beagle and She was perfectly fine with her! Not even a growl. She's such a strange dog..
