Angell Memorial Primary Care/wellness Vet

Boston area grey owners-do any of you have a regular vet at Angell Memorial? I'm looking to switch Ernie over there because I'd like him to have access to a greyhound savvy vet. My current vet has never treated a greyhound and while I think super competent, I'd rather have a vet who knows greyhounds and their quirks.

 

Can someone suggest one of the vets?

My greyhounds go to Angel for the specialists and the ER - Lucy sees Dr Sisson (neurologist) for her seizures and Dr Kearns (internal medicine) for her current possible IBD. Larry also seen Dr Kearns for a urinary issue and is due to go back soon. Larry has seen Dr Sission for his back issue.

 

Their regular vet is Dr. Mason at Dedham Veterinary Associates who takes care of the vaccines, cuts & scrapes, corns, and x-rays.

I too have used Dr. Mason at Dedham Veterinary Assoc.

 

There are SO many Greyhounds in Massachusetts you should not have to look far to find one that treats other hounds. And truthfully, there is really no reason to believe you'd do better at Angell, which is in fact a teaching hospital, and routine care is normally handled by newly minted vets, not old pros. They are also prohibitively expensive for most people.

 

My current place isn't that familiar with Greyhounds, but I have learned over the past few years that aside from differences in their chemistry numbers, which are easily taught to any vet, a Greyhound is still a dog, and a cut is a cut, worms are worms, heartworm tests are heartworm tests--in other words, any competent vet can handle routine care for a Greyhound.

I completely agree with this. While my boys are my babies and they are very special to me, they really are just dogs. As long as a vet is willing to learn and listen, I think any competent vet should do just fine.

We see Dr. Dunn at North Shore Animal Hospital in Lynn. He's not in as often as the other vets but all of the other vets at their office are really competent with greyhounds...they used to see a lot of the dogs from the Wonderland track in Revere. That being said, we just wanted a more grey-savvy vet because it made us feel more comfortable being first time grey owners.

 

For what it's worth, when we adopted from the MSPCA Angell Adoption Center they told us that Angell Medical Center is the best place to go for specialists, but relatively over-priced for regular vet visits.

agreed with using a good local vet for most work ... I can't recommend anyone in the area, but my own local vet was chosen because she acknowledged that she didn't know about greyhound physiology and was eager to investigate some of the reference sites I knew about.
