Newgreymom
Dylan had his Depo injection on Friday night and is doing great mobility wise. Today we noticed he was panting quite a bit. Can this be a side effect? I have a call into our Vet right now. His temp is normal. I just took it...
Hubcitypam
Never had that side effect...or honestly, none at all.
Newgreymom
Pam, I've been looking it up and low and behold, panting can be a side effect. I'm the kind of person who just freaks out over my dog when something isn't quite right...I think I'm crazy.
Hubcitypam
You're not crazy. I've had dogs have weird side effects from various and assorted drugs. Hope he's better soon.
tbhounds
Corticosteroids can make a dog pant-but, to be honest I would have thought you would have noticed the panting earlier on.
Newgreymom
Tracy, he was panting yesterday also, but just seems more constant today. He's resting right now and I've turned the heat down. Will this subside quick or will it be long term?
tbhounds
If the panting is from the depo it will subside as the drug wears off. Another thought-he may have overdone his activity?-sometimes as they feel better they become more active and in turn do more than they should. Forgot to ask--is he pu/pd (polyuria/polydipsia)--fancy words for urinating and drinking excessively?? Newgreymom
Tracy, no on both counts. We have been diligent about the water intake/output and it's totally the same. Just the panting...

Humm-I would think if the depo was the cause of the panting you would find him pu/pd too--may not be the depo. If he's eating and acting otherwise well I would see how he is in the next few days. It was warmer here lately-any chance he's just hot??
Newgreymom
Tracy, eating, peeing and pooping normal. Could his back hurt from the injection? My knee was sore for a few days after my cortisone shot. He's resting comfortably now. I turned the heat down a little, hoping that helps. Forgot to mention, he is not the most stoic dog I've ever met... Edited February 25, 2014 by Newgreymom
tbhounds
Dylan better today???
Newgreymom
Yes he is. It was almost like he had a small anxiety attack. He was completely normal today. What are your thoughts on Prilosec vs Pepcid?? He's been on Prilosec as he gets a little puky (yellow bile) once in awhile. Thanks for checking on him... tbhounds
Glad he's better. You can used either Prilosec or Pepcid. Many clinicians are still happy with Pepcid for minor tummy upset. I have used Prilosec in the past when one of my hounds was taking medications known to be hard on the tummy (OSU prescribed it). Can I assume you are giving 20mgs/day? Did you think the panting was associated with tummy upset?
