Guest jjsammi
Hi I have just adopted my gorgeous lurcher Ro. He is probably a whippet cross as he is small. Dont know much about him. He has had his tatoo removed from his ear so may have been racer/working dog? Any opinions would help. I sadly had to say goodbye to my fluffy Belgian /German shepherd in October he had been my first dog and was a rescue. I had him 5 lovely years. Ro is settling in well training coming along. He can sit sort of and lie down on command. He is scared of other dogs barks at them in distance which I am working on with rewarding good behaviour. He also has separation anxiety - another challenge! I will post pics soon x

DocsDoctor
Welcome and I look forward to seeing photos of Ro! So far as the tattoos are concerned, yes I understand some UK lurcher breeders do tattoo their dogs - see this website for instance: http://www.hancocklurchers.co.uk/ And as you probably already know pure-bred greyhounds get tattooed as puppies, so they can be registered for racing or coursing - those bred and registered in Ireland, like my Doc, will have tattoos in both ears, the English ones in just one ear (can't remember if it's right or left!): http://www.greyhound-data.com/earmark.htm?z=uHk9U2 Quote Clare with Tiger (Snapper Gar, b. 18/05/2015), and remembering Ken (Boomtown Ken, 01/05/2011-21/02/2020) and Doc (Barefoot Doctor, 20/08/2001-15/04/2015)."It is also to be noted of every species, that the handsomest of each move best ... and beasts of the most elegant form, always excel in speed; of this, the horse and greyhound are beautiful examples."----Wiliam Hogarth, The Analysis of Beauty, 1753. silverfish
Hi - and welcome from another UK Gter! You say Ro had his tattoo removed - does he have a scar? Whippets and lurchers aren't usually tattooed in the ear/s in the UK, only really if they are Hancock lurchers, and the Hancock's specialise in collie/greyhound lurchers as far as I know. I believe they tattoo their dogs in the right ear.If you think he may be big enough to be a collie/greyhound cross, you might try sending a photo to the Hancocks to see if they recognise him. If he is a Hancock lurcher and really has had his tattoo removed, I imagine it's so that the previous owner can't be traced by contacting the Hancocks. I'm pretty sure they'd be upset to hear he'd been subjected to that, and may want to follow it up (I don't know them personally, and don't endorse the breeding of lurchers per se, but they do seem to be a small family run kennel who take it seriously). Guest kmcmcf
Welcome from Arkansas Ozarks, and congrats on your adoption of Ro! For the separation anxiety, maybe look in the training forums - I've seen some really good posts on alone training. Good luck, and have fun with your new pup!
