New Greyhound's Got A Red Hairless Mystery Patch?

Hi Everyone :)

We just adopted our lovely Bhombolina (racing name Ale Flashy) a couple weeks ago. When she came to us, there was this red, hairless patch, about 2" x 2.5". She visited the vet for her first time the day after, and the vet wasn't alarmed. The vet just said to watch out and see if the hair grows back/if it goes away. It hasn't. The red hairless patch is at the deepest point in her rib cage, where I think it rubs against the ground a lot when she lays down. Again, it doesn't seem to make her uncomfortable in any way, but it makes a new (first time) greyt parent nervous! Perhaps unrelated, but her inner thigh has gotten a few small red spots now, too. I think this is where she nips at herself once in a while (maybe 2 or 3 times a day for a second or two each time).

Any ideas? We aren't scheduled to see the vet for a few more months, but we're sure willing to take her in if it seems necessary!

I've included a link to pictures of the rash (I didn't want to insert the pictures here, as they're quite large! Link to rash pics

Thanks in advance!

My Greys have all come with a variety of hairless spots including thighs, chest, neck & side, etc. Bald thighs are common & nearly bald chests, meaning underneath & near stomach area, is not unheard of. Two of mine came with small, bald, red spots on their hind legs. These spots were in the middle of very hairy areas. These are scars from some unknown injury. The hair never grew back. Only one of these dogs has skin issues. He has allergies but his bald chest seems totally unrelated to that. He simply have very sparse hair there.

Guess I'm no help except to say I agree with your vet but if those new bumps don't resolve quickly or she gets more I'd probably schedule a follow up vet visit. Good luck.

Doc had a similar red patch when I adopted him - as you say, it's the bit that hits the ground first when they do that greyhound thing of lying down straight with front paws out like a sphinx. On a hard surface like the concrete in kennels, that can wear the hair off and also create irritation. The kennel manager at our greyhound rescue advises using Sudocrem for this and similar rashes - if you don't have this in the States, I'm sure you can find something similar. It's just a mild, rather greasy antiseptic cream, designed to sort out human nappy rash. It did work well and now I always keep some in store. For a rash in an area she can lick, like her thighs, put it on just before a walk so it gets a chance to soak in before she can lick it off!

Image does not work, but it sounds like the typical bald tummy that many greys have. The "rash" is probably zits or black heads and most will go away with a warm compress and gentle squeezing of them. Not an emergency in my house. But I do enjoy squeezing Disco's zits occasionally. :lol :lol

Thanks for the advice, all!

Whoops, sorry the other link didn't work. I've input the picture below, here, since it kinda/sorta shows the rashes. Yes, the rash she came to us with is at the spot which hits the ground first when she lays like a Sphinx (great image! And maybe a good name for a Greyt?:colgate). The other rashes aren't scarred spots where hair doesn't grow back (she has a few of those too, though not big).

We've been recommended, also, to try some Benadryl-type product for a few days and see if it doesn't clear up. Someone also suggested that she may be allergic to her food (Orijens Adult regular).

I'll definitely try the diaper rash cream, thanks for the advice! And, I think as long as I give her a big ol beef bone to gnaw on (she had her first one today, and after an hour straight of chewing, she's passed out on the couch next to me!), she probably won't take much interest in licking the rash cream. :)

ALSO, I realize the picture below is very revealing, even for a dog. I read the posting guidelines, but I didn't see much about this kind of picture. If it's not ok to post a picture which shows her whole underside, just PM me and I'll take it right down! :blush

Hahaha, I'll try it! I think my fiance would be *very* glad to have me pick on someone else's skin, for once!!! :P

Oh we've seen and enjoyed much more revealing shots than that, heh heh. Greyhound porn is a subgenre of its own. :P

Oh, whew! I was imagining all the nasty flames that could have come bc of the shot. :eek Yup, she's still got the rash, though it really doesn't seem to bug her. Any ideas? We're going to try the diaper rash cream, as suggested, but any other ideas welcome!
