XTRAWLD
Ryder drinks water like it's going out of style. I know in some dogs this is a sign of a diabetic dog. How much is too much? Are there other signs I should look for? CaliforniaGreys
Excessive drinking can mean a lot of different things, and it could also mean nothing but habit, type of food being fed, and sometimes boredom as well. And I suppose "a lot" is relative. Has he always done this or is it something new? greymomnc
How is his coat? Streak was drinking a lot of water as well. She also had no stomach hair, no neck hair, no butt hair etc. We finally got to the bottom of this. She was diagnosed with atypical cushing's disease. XTRAWLD
He has ALWAYS drank this much. It's odd for us because Kasey drinks very little, but this guy just stands and the bowl and laps it up. When we were on raw, he did not drink as much, so I think it could just be the fact he's eating kibble. I would assume drinking this much is normal for him, since he has always done it, but his routine is to consume a full bowl every morning within 1 hour or so, and again after dinner. When we know we are heading out, we do stop him from drinking because he will finish the bowl if we let him. Just last week I added a litre bottle to his bowl (we have one of those hookup thingys built into the stand so he would have a constant supply) to see how much he would actually drink since it was the weekend and we were home. He didn't drink more than "his" usual that I noted. He does not get a lot of exercise, only the typical 4-6 walks a day, so there isn't any running and heavy panting requiring him to drink gobs and gobs of water. The timing for him to pee is just about an hour after he has drank steadily. I do believe he is bored, our house is pretty quiet...maybe that's it? His coat could use some work. It's greasy to the touch, even within a couple days after a bath, more so closer to the top of his tail and back end. It's coarse and he is actually shedding lots. He still has his "racetrack coat" as I like to call it, but it's full, everywhere, even on his butt. greyhead
Excessive drinking and a greasy coat are indicators of dehydration. The first thing that pops into my mind are kidney issues. Has he had a chemistry profile done since you've had him? I'd be wanting to get with a vet about this, myself. Batmom
How many times does he go out during the day? How long does he hold it overnight? Any accidents indoors? If in doubt, it wouldn't hurt to have a urinalysis (on first of the morning urine) and bloodwork done. But, 8-10 cups of water a day is not unreasonable for a 70-80 lb male greyhound. XTRAWLD
He goes out 4-6 times a day on walks, we take him out between that time if we notice he has been drinking a lot. No accidents in the house, he can hold it overnight for 10 hours, during the day when we are not home 7 hours. Thanks for the cup a day estimate. I'll measure his bowl and determine just how much he's drinking and not sharing with Kasey. Guest mbfilby
The track kennels that I've seen only supply water at turnout, so this could be a habit he has learned. Drinking all at once instead of smaller quantities more frequently.

Guest BrianRke
Frank drinks more water than my other two combined. I was concerned about this too but he is perfectly healthy. I think he just likes to drink.
