So, a friend who is a wonderful vet has come up with a trial plan for my discoid lupus boy. She has this new healing laser wand that we will be using on his nose once a week for 8 weeks along with an ointment of Tacrolimus. Everyone she has contacted has to compound this and it costs a pretty penny, however over in Canada we can buy it already in ointment form and for half the cost. She has written me a script.

Any of Canadian friends out here like to recommend a company?

Many thanks!

ETA: I've contacted Susan at McMurray Apoctherapy with no response yet on this. Sharon (vet) knows of someone in Houston that may be able to make this, but it seems odd that we cannot buy it here as an ointment. I would actually prefer if I have to compound this for it to be a cream. But really need to work with someone!

So far, that is the one that looked the best when I searched! Thanks! Before I order from there, I was hoping someone out here had some experience with one!

Amazing, in the US this ointment is over $140 on average and has to be compounded but in Canada it already is in ointment form and is half the cost! My vet was just throwing her hands up in the air over that!

did you see this on the website?

Manitoba pharmacists are not permitted to fill US physicians' prescriptions. The can only fill prescriptions issued by a physician licensed in a province or territory of Canada. M.Ph.A takes the position that it may be contrary to professional standards for a pharmacist to fill prescriptions by a physician, licensed in a province or territory of Canada, who has not established an acceptable patient physician relationship with you.

Thanks, Pam. I looked them up on the National Board of Pharmacy Associates and they say they are not a certified pharmacy. But for what, America? All such a joke. I do not want to fall victim to a scam or get inferior product, but I do need to get this!

:nod A friend of mine in AZ crosses the border into Mexico twice a year and buys me ventolin inhalers along with her other stuff. The inhalers cost around $3 each and are the full size blue ones that used to be sold here until the propellent change. What she gets for $9 would cost me $54 at Sams for 6 of the half size. She has been doing this for me for at least 5 years now and I've lived to tell the tale.

Once she sent them in the purple bag from the place she buys from. It said ""***** drugs and liquor" (what people bring back from Mexico -- one stop shopping). I am fairly certain that it is not a certified pharmacy....:blush

Please remember whatever you put on your dog's nose is going to be injested so both the drug and the base have to be edible/food quality/non-toxic. Unlike a cream or ointment or gel that would go elsewhere on a dog's body you can't bandage it or put on an e-collar to keep them from licking it.

This may be where the price difference is coming in. Something that is already formulated to go on human skin may or may not meet the toxicological needs for a dog's GI system.

Roadrunner Pharmacy in Phoenix AZ has been doing Gus's Taco compounding for years. Have never had any issues with them and their prices are reasonable. No problems with delivery either.

Gus's Tacro (my bad spelling) was compounded in a solution as opposed to an ointment for his Pannus. My doggie "Eye Doctor" recommended them even though we are in Miami and they are in Phoenix. I never had any issues with Dr. K. faxing the Rx and all I had to do was cal them when I needed a refill. Was able to pay for it with my credit card and Gus's drops lasted me for many months at a time. It cost about $40.00. Call them and ask for a price on what you need. Their customer service is excellent. As for remembering Gus, they never met him. They always put a toy in with the Rx. Turn around time is only a couple of days. Call them or have your vet fax or call.....

Sigh. They will only work with vets they are contracted with. A side note, I called the manufacturer on the Canadian side and they said they do not make this in an ointment form for canines and that it has to be compounded. So, thanks for the directions everyone! Now if anyone does know of a compounding pharm that will call me back and work with my vet and myself.........

Here is one that I have used in Dallas -- They seemed to have excellent customer service and are family owned. They do a HUGE compounding business on a local level.

Used this when I lived in Illinois

Might also try this one I grew up using. It says they compound for pets and people and mail anywhere.

Good Luck!

I talked to Holly at Caprock and she said just the 1% of the drug would cost her just about $100 to order...plus compounding and posssibly a hazmat fee so $140 is probably about right. She'll do it but it'll cost you. If you call ask for her -- she is the compounder.

You can try the compounding pharmacy we use for Saint. They've always been really friendly, reliable and they are the least expensive in the area. Here is their website www.regelpharmalab.com

Pam- that was what bothered me the most, not the expense to me, rather how can it be less than half the cost ordering elsewhere? Makes me worried with this drug. I'm going to call RoadRunner and start pleading cases down the line! Thanks for the info, everyone!

As a side note, if this laser therapy does work in any way, it could be a huge breakthrough. The best result is it puts the nose scaling in a remission type state for months at a time and then have to do it again for once a week for a month when it gets bad. With NO drugs. Right now it is so bad we want to give him a jump start. Can you imagine? A therapy for Discoid Lupus without drugs? She has two specialists for vet dermatalogy working with her on this all from A&M and she is most excited! As I am, too! Worst case is that it just helps heal the nose without any steroids. Also, awesome!

Seriously. I don't know if they were just being nice or if they knew. But as soon as I said I had called earlier but someone from the Greyhound world that had the Gustopher B Jones said to call again, the door was opened.

Sending Gus a Thank You to the bridge!
