Guest Energy11
Hard to tell from the photo. I'd use some alcohol or witch hazel on the area the tick was removed from. Usually that helps get the rest out, if it isn't already. "Nice" little creatures, aren't they? ... NOT!
GeorgeofNE
Yes, but it's no big deal if you didn't. That tick looks to be pretty full and nearly ready to drop off her anyway. Worst thing that will happen if part of the head stayed in is she'll get what amounts to a pimple which will disappear in no time. Quote Susan, Hamish, Mister Bigglesworth and Nikita Stanislav. Neither of mine have ever had a tick before.
Batmom
Wouldn't worry about TBD unless you see some key symptoms. Head left in or not doesn't matter re TBD. As GeorgeOfNE noted, if part of head is left in, you'd just get a small localized pimple-like thingy, and it would pop, and then it'd be gone. Really does look like you got the whole thing, tho. Guest FrostyBottoms
The issue with TBDs is how long the tick was attached for. Also try to get them off in such a way that doesn't squeeze all the gunk out - if there is a TBD in there you could squeez it into your dog's blood stream. You can buy little tick removers that are superior to hemostats for a big bloated tick (hemostats work fine for the little ones). A bite of 3-6 hours is enough to transmit Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, thankfully most other TBDs need longer (2 days for Lyme). Remember - constant and firm pressure - not a fast yank - will help insure you get the head and don't squeeze all the gunk back into your dog. If you don't get the head they'll probably just get a local immune reaction and some itching, no biggie. When he first pulled it out, all that gunk was in a big ball...then he smeared it all over the paper towel....gross! Guest JarBear
We also use the Ticked Off tick remover. They work great. I've even had to use it on DH a few times after he's mowed in the wooded area on the back of our property.
