When DH and I lost our little parakeet many years ago, people could not understand how we could grieve so deeply for "just a bird". They do get into our hearts and make our lives richer. RIP Blitzen. When it came time to say good-bye to Hammy the Hamster a few years back, I went through the same thing. I was a mess at work and couldn't walk by the TV room, where his cage was, without looking for him! These little guys certainly work their way into our hearts, don't they!
