Pippin
I took Zoe in for a nail-trimming today, and the vet tech told me that Doc's sweet girl Maddie (non-grey) had crossed the bridge Tues night. Maddie had the run of the clinic, and was a fixture there for longer than Doc's been my vet. I think last time I was in, Doc said she was maybe 11 or more years old. I'm probably messing up the details, but the general concept is sound. Apparently, she had seizures, and over the weekend they got worse and more frequent. Doc took her to the specialists, and they did what they could, but it was pretty clear that it was time to let her go. There was blood in her lungs, and lesions in various spots that were most likely cancer, and she couldn't breathe/didn't have any energy, etc. Doc & her friends headed over to the specialists to get her, expecting that they would bring her home to Doc's house and help her to the bridge from there. As they left the vet, Doc sat in the back of the vehicle with Maddie, saying all the things we say to our pets at a time like that, and Maddie had apparently just been waiting to be reunited with Doc, because she left for the bridge while she was there in the car, in Doc's arms, surrounded by the love that had filled her life. Godspeed, sweetheart - you were a special girl, and I'm glad I knew you. Send your mama some good memories, and when her heart is ready, talk her into adopting a greyhound. "run to good health" is what Doc says to the pet when she euthanizes him or her. It helps to know that Maddie is pain-free and in perfect health now, but my heart aches for my vet.
