Hi Anne,

While Ben was here, we gave him his "poopy" medicine twice a day. Also, until i learned of his surgeries, he had constipation problems and was given mineral oil (about 2 tablespoons) on his feed. That worked really well, seemed to soften his poop and allowed it to pass easier. Maybe using both will help.

The feed mix here is raw ground beef, Purina dry kibble and hot water. The mix is somewhat wet but not soupy. He didn't have a screaming episode after I came in but I was told he did during the interim between the old staff and myself, that's when they started him on the mineral oil. I continued the mineral oil until I found out about his surgeries and tracked down the vet that did the surgeries and called him. They're the ones that said to use the stool softener twice a day.

If you need anything, please let me know. I'll ask our regular vet to get his records and review it to see if he has any other advice or suggestions.

Oh any information that you can give me on his surgeries would be so appreciated. My vet said that that area is so hard to heal, and she didn't know why he has two pockets on either side of the colon. He does really good for a while and then he doesn't. He gets dulcolax 2x a day, his dry food which has now been switched to Royal Canin ID,half a can of wet food ,fish oil cap and half a cup of hot water.I know when I had him on pedigree dry kibble that caused some problems, but after the first episode I switched to Authority dry along with the other ingredients. Poor guy, I was so upset last night ..I had Bernie with me and you never know what will make a dog lash out in fear and pain..but he stood silently by watching his brother...I'll also try the mineral oil as well...anything so he doesn't have to go thru that again!

Seems like I might have suggested a long time ago that he was fed raw with some sort of Purina.

My suggestion and for the last time would be, just like before, put the dog on the diet he was getting at the adoption kennel where none of these problems were an issue.

Take them or leave them for what they are, suggestions.

It's just frustrating to read your post over and over again about the same issues and time and time again many suggest you go back to what he was getting at the adoption kennel before he came to you and it seems like you don't want to hear that.

Mel has to come on here and post the info when long ago you should have just contacted her and asked the questions directly from someone who worked with the dog first hand and didn't have any of these issues.

Hope that Ben is feeling better soon. That must have been frightening to see him so uncomfortable.

If he was doing well at the kennel, seems like it would be a really good idea to use that same regime at home and see how he does. Good luck!

How is he today?

One question, when he had the poop in the house episodes did you cut anything out of his regimine? Personally, I would much rather clean poop than have a dog in any kind of pain. :dunno

I agree with the advice Heather gave you regarding his food. To reiterate, call Mel, get the portions and feed him EXACTLY as he ate with no problems before he came to you, changing nothing. See how he does then.

I believe that there are many members here on GT and each one will give you the "what worked for me" advice, which is fantastic, but, you are luckier than most of us as Mel will give you the "what worked for Ben" which is even better.

I feel so bad for Ben going through all of this. :bighug and a :kiss2 for sweet Ben!!

He's doing really, really well on the new diet, thanks for asking! It's been four nights and counting and NO Accidents! His poop is good and he's able to pass it a lot easier.

I see you're giving him a fish oil capsule and mineral oil. You may want to increase the dosage of the fish oil and eliminate the mineral oil; perhaps salmon oil from a bottle rather than a capsule (two or three squirts). The Omega-3 in salmon oil is very good for him and may ease his condition. I would ask your vet about this.

I use the EicosaDerm recommended to me by several vets, and the dogs get 4 squirts a day and that's 8000 mg. It's made a huge difference for them.

Um .... the thing is, Ben isn't getting oil for general health or to improve his coat. He's getting oil to move stuff through his intestines. And in that respect, mineral oil has one important difference from the others: It is not digestible. It just moves things on through.

If there's a diet where this boy is known to be stable, I honestly would keep him on that and look for three months of no screams, no vet visits before making ANY changes. If that can't be achieved, he needs to see a specialist.

Fingers crossed.

Totally agree with the mineral oil thing- it's a home remedy my mom used to give to the horses that colicked. Mineral oil works.

OK, mine was just a suggestion. From experience, I note that increasing the amount of fish oil also serves as a lubricant and it has enabled my hounds to pass stuff through more easily.

Same here, it's made a huge difference in their stools, not just their coat and skin. But for this boy, whatever they were doing at the kennel was working for him

Anne, if it were me, I'd stick with the mineral oil. It worked before, and ITS CHEAP :)

Good luck, lots of hugs for you and my b-boyz, and how is the old Benner doing today????
