Cbc Vs Chem Panel

Recommended Posts

That's what I thought, but the vet tech is telling me no.

She's also telling me it isn't required. I said fine, but I want it done anyway.

This vet won't refill his pb rx until they do level testing every year. Um, making sure his organs are still ok would be a much bigger concern to me.

Can't wait to have vet choices again!

It's not the expense, it is that to me, the therapeutic level is not the deciding factor on renewing his meds - his organ function is.

Or at least with every other vet he's ever been to it has been. Just seems they are testing the wrong thing.

On the bright side, I have plenty of KBr left until we are somewhere else so at least they won't be making me have a KBr level done on him too.

Fasting is never mentioned to clients but, the lab would love a fasting sample for the chem. Sometimes if the pet ate just before the blood draw you can get a lipemic (fatty)sample which may alter the results (especially when looking at liver values).

Fasting is never mentioned but it is a Godsend! we had a reagent that we could clear the lipemia (fat in the blood) in non-fasted samples (that looked like red frothy milk) but that dilutes the sample and you have to multiply the results by 1.2 to get ballpark values. If you can fast, do! Our big chem panel used to test Cholesterol and Trigylcerides (always high in Schnauzers btw) as well as glucose.

Every vet I have used requires fasting for a chem panel. Several of the liver & pancreatic values change after they have eaten. In the past when I wasn't aware they required fasting I had to come back the next day and do it again. The results of the two were very different.

My own Dr requires fasting also.

We don't do it for routine testing but if there's a funky value or some symptoms to deal with, we do.
