Guest hvacman250
Is OSU just cancer related and general health, or do their specialize in greyhound orthopedic problems? If the do, I will have my vet call or email them. If not, at least I tried. I'm trying to exhaut every avenue possible. I'm just having a hard time coming to grips that amputation maybe our best option

Batmom
Might check the vet school at NCSU? Also, docs at OSU might be able to recommend someone closer to you who does the kind of work you need. turbotaina
Dr. Dyce at OSU would likely review your films/records at no charge and give you and/or your vet his opinion and possible treatment options. In fact, OSU just helped me out with one of our foster dogs via email . I don't know where you are, but if you're close to Wheeling, WV, Dr. Radcliffe is phenomenal. He's a GP vet with a specialization in orthopedic issues and he sees the Wheeling Downs dogs. If you're in Florida, I understand the Drs. Dees in Miami are fantastic as well. In Massachusetts, I have been recommended Dr. Melissa Duffey at VCA Northboro as 'one of the best' a particular greyhound trainer has ever seen. ETA: Just saw you're in SC and said you're 500-ish miles from OSU, so you're not any closer to Wheeling. It certainly wouldn't hurt to contact OSU though. Good luck! joejoesmom
Would OSU be cheaper than any other ortho spceialist b/c of the GH Wellness program? They are 8 1/2 hrs away, 521 miles. I live in central Ohio and have taken several dogs to OSU for treatment. My greyhound is a blood donor for Dr. Couto's blood bank group. He has seen Dr. Couto for an injury and my fosters have occasionally needed to see Dr. Couto. I will give you what I have experienced but would still check with OSU for confirmation. In general, the Greyhound Health and Wellness Group does not do surgeries (although they do sponsor clinics for spay/neuter and dentals). The surgery is done at the OSU Vet Hospital (same place, just different people and funding). Procedures and appointments that are not through the Health and Wellness Group are charged the same whether you have a greyhound or not. The cost is higher than a general vet but probably in line with other veterinary specialists. So you are likely looking at a similar cost. My current foster went into see Dr. Couto in May (non-surgical). Dr. Couto felt that the dermatology team would be best suited to handle the issue. We had to pay full price for the dermatology consult, but Dr. Couto reduced the cost for the appointment with his team. The big advantage is that everyone at OSU is very greyhound savvy and they have the experts right across the hall should they have any problems. Although they don't do the actual surgery, the Health and Wellness Team is very involved in the care of any greyhound that comes to OSU. Most of the vet students (and veterinarians) at OSU go through a greyhound rotation with Dr. Couto's group. Therefore everyone is quite familiar with the unique needs of greyhounds. In rare cases, Dr. Couto may have some funding to offset the costs of non-Greyhound Wellness program care. To the best of my knowledge, this is not common though. It would be best to ask them about it. Hope this helps and I am very sorry that you and your hound are facing this. Jane p.s. If you do decide to come to OSU, please let me know. I might be able to help you with logistics, etc.
sweetdogs
Jane, thanks for your post - it was very informative. I especially liked this part: Most of the vet students (and veterinarians) at OSU go through a greyhound rotation with Dr. Couto's group. Therefore everyone is quite familiar with the unique needs of greyhounds. It's like Dr. Couto is seeding the world with greyhound-experienced vets.
