So I have a 7 year old brindle grey named phoenix. I am a vet tech and work at a vet hospital. Starting on saturday...Everything my roommate and I leave phoenix decieded that he is going to urinate on the landing at the top of the stairs. Very unusual for him. So today I had a staff meeting and decided to run a urine sample on him. Wee there is blood and such in his urine. So I was thinking a uti. When the vet examined him noticed that he was painful when doing a prostate exam. Took an x-ray and sure enough there is a vry enlarged prostate. We were also checking for stones which he is clear of. So there are many possible things that could be but of course one of them is Cancer.

I hate to think of such awful things but I am just trying to think o all possibilites. Anyways just needed to come on hereand vent a little bit and see if anyone else has come across this. I know this is something with greys since they aren't neutered till later but just thought that I would put this out there.

Oh yes treatment for know. We are trying him on antibiotics and seeing what happens in a week. See if things go down and are less painful maybe going to do an ultrasound. Thanks for listening and reading

You are in THE BEST area for greyhound vets and advice!

Dr. Couto, is the head of The Greyhound Wellness Program at OSU. If you feel you want another opinion, or want your dog seen there, that would be the best way to go!

Good luck with this! D

p.s. Dr. Couto's email is: couto.1@osu.edu

Thank you all. Yes I know Dr. Couto. y grey is in the blood donating program there. He isn't straining or anything that I have noticed. I did think it was funny when the vet asked me if phoenix has been more lethargic. Now that is an interesting question for a greyhound. I don't think I would know if he was lethargic

:lol Oh, you are so right on! Will keep all fingers, toes and paws crossed for Phoenix in hopes that the rx works and no further treatment needed.

I have no experience with this at all, but my sister's lab is having a prostate problem. Her and I are always banging heads because her lab isin't neutered and I've been at her for a few years to neuter him.

According to her vet, prostate problems have nothing to do with being neutered or not. I don't agree with that but I'm not a vet.

Wishing you all good news!!!!

Austin had a pretty bad prostrate infection before he was neutered. Treated it, neutered him and it never returned. Hopefully the atbs will fix him right up :)

I will say, though, that I've not seen a prostrate infection in a neutered male. I wouldn't worry yet. Had his prostrate been checked via exam previously?

Sending prayers :)

He really hasn't had his prostate checked before. He did hurt his leg back in september and you can see the prostate in the x-ray. So measuring between september and now it has about doubled in size. this was kinda the way that we knew it is bigger then before. And during the exam he is yelping and trying to bite me. So I know that he is painful when it is pressed. Once again thanks for all the concern. We will know something more on wednesday. hopefully good
