Toothpaste

What do you consider to be the very best, ultimate toothpaste for dogs?

My dear little Ruby, age 9, has bad teeth and gum disease, and she's had a dental annually. Last February, after her dental, I committed to brushing the dogs' teeth EVERY DAY, and I have done really well....I think I missed only one or two days since then. In spite of that, at her check up last week the vet says she needs her teeth cleaned again. :( So far she has had four or five teeth extracted.

Buddy also has icky teeth (he is nearly12)....his little teeth in the front are awful, and when he had his dental in May I told the vet to go ahead and pull them if she thought they needed it, but she didn't. Those teeth are ground down, and you can just tell they are sensitive; he winces when I try to brush them. :( I guess the vet thought they weren't *bad enough* to pull. Even though his dental was in May, I can tell his teeth are bad again...the breath is really getting bad.....Buddy has had NO teeth pulled.

So, I have used a LOT of different toothpastes, and wonder what all of you consider THE BEST and MOST EFFECTIVE.

Here are some that I've used:

Petrodex

Triple Pet

CET

Dent-Acetic

PetZLife

Wysong Denta Treat

These run the gamut from a few dollars a tube up to almost $25 for a bottle! :eek

Anyone?

Unfortunately that's not going to happen. I know that bones are great, but Ruby will NOT eat a bone. She looks at me like I'm nuts. And given the weather around here, I don't relish the idea of raw food/bones in the house. I doubt I could convince them to eat outside when it's 10 degrees....We don't crate...or even HAVE any crates....

So I am stuck with regular food, and toothbrushing.

We use the CET tarter control toothpaste. We buy it online. But, if your dog is prone to bad teeth, unfortunately there is little you can do other than brush every day and add CET additive to their water. Polli had 17 teeth removed at 8.5 years old at her 1st dental. Since that time, she has had 3 dentals in 14 months and I do brush her teeth every day.

Have you tried the denta-bones?

I know you said Rudy will not eay a bone, but not sure if you meant ANY bone or just "real" ones associalted w/ Raw feeding?

As for toothpaste, can't really say which would be the best. Sammi doesnt appreciate her teeth being brushed, so I have used a dentabone a week for her and with as much as she yawns in my face <_<, her breath hasnt burned my retenas yet.

Hey there. I don't know which is "best," and I suppose it's ultimately up to Ruby and Buddy, :brushteeth but my hounds are happy with the Petrodex poultry flavor toothpaste. :puke They weren't crazy about the mint flavor, so I tried poultry and since they like it I stopped looking.

My Holly, almost 10, has gingivitis, so she too gets an annual dental plus frequent brushing (especially since she is also a poop eater!).

I don't know if it helps, but I also feed them FreshBites, biscuits made by HealthPro Nutrition www.healthpronutrition.com. They are holistic minty biscuits that smell yummy and are supposed to help clean their teeth and freshen breath.

I use the petrodex too. Em is 7 and has not had a dental since we got him at 3 1/2. I thought some of his back teeth looked pretty bad, but the vet said they weren't bad enough to put him under to do a dental and that I'm doing a good job with the brushing keep it up...so I've stuck with what has worked.

Forgot to mention that both of my hounds, ages 11 and almost 10, still have all their choppers. Worn down and stained but still hanging in there!

I also give them Pedigree Dentabones every once in awhile (small size, I think). I tried the green Nutrident (sp?) edible dental chews (like Greenies), but I recall Holly had some bloody mucus in her stool a few times after I gave her one, so I don't feed them anymore. I gather she didn't chew it or wasn't able to properly digest?

My hounds are chew on plain Nylabones as the mood strikes.

She won't eat RAW bones. She loves most any other type of treat.

She also seems to like having her teeth brushed, regardless of the type of toothpaste. I wanted to know which one gave the best RESULTS; was the most effective.

The dental vet specialist said to use CET tarter control toothpaste. We buy it on-line. I bought it last month for $4.77 tube from www.petsupplies4less.com. www.LambertVetSupply.com had it for $4.15/tube.

I don't know which is the best, but it may be like humans. It's not what you use, but how long you brush. It's advocated for people to brush for 2 minutes - that way you're sure to get all surfaces clean. I think any of those are fine combined with regular usage. But some hounds just have bad mouths. :(
