Hobbes Titer Results Came In

Recommended Posts

They weren't what we were expecting. Hobbes had a very weak positive for 2 of the 6 strains that they test for. The vet is now thinking it probably was not lepto at all as he should have had a a stronger positive. We tested for it fairly early so that may have contributed to the weak results, so we are going to retest in 3 weeks to see if anything has changed.

It isn't really the news we wanted as now we don't know what we are dealing with. Since the treatment seems to be working we will stick with it for now.

He is going in tomorrow to get his urine retested just to be 100% sure he does not have a UTI. He will also have more blood work to see if there has been any improvement with his kidneys and liver.

He is acting and I believe feeling much better. All and all Hobbes is doing good. His personality is back to the same Hobbes I've always known and loved. He has a lot more energy and doesn't seem to be having any pain walking. Slowly he is starting to eat more. He is eating around 2 cups a day now, not nearly enough but much improved from before. I do have to spoon feed him to get that much in him and I realize I may be creating a monster but I'll leave the tough love for when he is all better.

I think you should consider doing a tick panel with that lab in the states. A lot of his symptoms really fit TBD.

Check out this thread.

I did a complete tick panel in the beginning. I even paid extra to get a more complete test of rarer TBD that they don't usually test for. Everything came back negative.

Just wanted to add when his heart worm was done back in May he had been tested for erlichiosis. So he was tested twice for that one.

Thanks for all your help. I had forgot to mention I ran the test because so much was going on at the time.

Has his urine been cultured? Something in the dark recesses of my memory wants to say that urine cultures may show the presence of bacteria when a urinalysis cannot. Can anyone shed some light on this?

His urine was cultured and came back negative. He has been having many accidents indoors since he came home on Saturday but the vet believes it is his kidneys causing this.

Very true!! Many times a UA will show no bacteria and then when they grow the culture....there it is!

:nod Happened to me in April. Only thing was 2 cultures using clean catch jars were clear as well. After Zella peed in the car they did a needle collection and cultured that. Sure enough 2 different bacteria showed up.

Hope you figure things out for poor Hobbes, and you.

  • 3 weeks later...

We did a second set of titer tests early last week, and finally the mystery is solved.

He ended up having a strong positive for Leptospirosis Pomona. The first test was probably done before his body had time to make antibodies, so we only got a weak positive.

I can't be happier that this whole thing is now behind us, and I can get on with spoiling my old Hobbsey man!!
