rschultz Posted October 28, 2008 Share Posted October 28, 2008 about a month ago after picking lexie up from a well cleaned kennel she had diarrhea. vet put her on an antibiotic which cleared it up .He thught maybe she ate something out in the kennel yard. as soon as the antibiotic was done the diarrhea came back. Vet put her on antibiotic again. This time it is not helping. She has been on it a week. He did a stool sample the first time and no parasites. I am calling tomorrow cause i think he said if she still has no change he would have to send out a screening. What will they be looking for in that screening and what could she have? The vet had me add bil jac to her food. He said that always firms up poops but that didnt even help. Was wondering if anyone knew what they screen for and what could she have? She still poops the same amount each day..three times.. but it is not formed at all. she is not lethargic. Additionally, they get infected by whipworms from the soil, not fecal matter. After two rounds of Panacur Soul is finally back to normal . . . . . My vet said that this isn't something they usually check for so when I brought the samples in I had to tell the tech to check with the vet before testing. He didn't have it, but I'd guess it wouldn't hurt to have them check yours just to be sure ?? Try putting cooked Rice and some boiled Groundbeef in his Kibbles with a little warm Water. My Boy has firm Poop most at the time and I contribute it to ProPlan Beef or Chicken w/Rice . He is not the best Eater but with a little Varietions he will eat. Hopefully the Vet gets to the Bottom of that. Guest akgs13 Posted November 13, 2008 Share Posted November 13, 2008 We had a hard time too After a visit to the vet we were given an extra dose of meds to get rid of any possible worms, and they put him on id by science diet, it is a miracle food addition. I changed his food to kirkland and added this about 10 minutes before meal time, I gave him beet pulp, pumpkin, and yogurt. It settled his tummy and he has had no problems since. Guest turbospeed Posted November 13, 2008 Share Posted November 13, 2008 Here's a thought--we have had problems with our 8 1/2 year old's sensitive stomach--try using canned pumpkin. Give it a couple of days, and what I do is mix about 1-2 TBSP in with his food twice a day. After a couple of days you should see some results of firmer stools. Hope this helps. rschultz Posted November 20, 2008 Author Share Posted November 20, 2008 ok i will try the canned pumpkin ty lexie is starting the low residue diet this week hopefully this helps if not vet said next step is to see a specialist she did well at the kennel while we were away. she got to play with a basset hound, german shepperd and 2 great danes. she was in heaven the owner said oh and if the low doesnt work i have never done raw. it kind of grosses me out but i would be willing to try if it meant her not having a colonoscopy. what would the easiset raw things be? I personally know a dog with these problems and the symptoms sound the same as Lexi's. He had an endoscopy to diagnose this. He needs to be on low res food and tylosin powder for now. He was on antibiotics for over a month to deal with the infection and overgrowth. He did have an endoscopy (not a colonoscopy) to diagnose the bacterial problems. The endoscopy wasn't so terrible. He had the colonoscopy first but it just showed inflammation. He's 10 and did just fine with the diagnostics. You're on the right track. Warning; it's very bitter. I put it in empty gel caps to hide the taste. PS I didn't know it's available without a prescription. Thanks for the heads up! Could it be too much for her and causing diarrhea? Some dogs -- and people -- can't tolerate much of that. (I have bowel troubles too and know I can't tolerate anything but salmon oil in small doses.) Why not just stop them and see what happens? Try lots of white rice, boiled chicken meat or sweet potatoe added to the food. I will give that a week and see what happens. If not, I may try the raw before going to the specialist. I really only want to do that as last resort. She seems happy and her usually self other than that, if she wasnt I would really be worried. I don't know if she's eating yogurt or not, but even that can cause D in some dogs. Once a vet told me to give it to one of my dogs several times a day but it gave him awful D. Some dogs are actually lactose-intolerant. Marcia Edited b/c I mixed her up with another loose poop dog. There sure seems to be a lot of bowel problems here lately!
