stlgrey
Does anyone or have there been any GT'ers that have had a hound contract histoplasmosis? They thought that Sierra had lymphoma and we got the path report today. It was negative for lymphoma, thank the Lord.
Guest SusanP
I understand that it is not uncommon in the Boundary Waters area of Northern MN. We know someone whose dog died of it. Sending healing thoughts to your pup.
patricia
Not one of our greys...But our Angel Cody Angelo had Histo...but what took him was Blasto. I am very happy it is not cancer...Please let me know if I can help in anyway. Cody had to have tons of fluid drained from his chest...his cough was so bad. He then had a CT under anesthesia and went to surgery for multiple biopsies in his chest. He was on antifungals which didn't help him too much....nor did antibiotics. The only thing that kept him comfortable was Pred. Initially they thought that he had pneumonia and his lungs were so full of fluid but so was his whole chest cavity. His cough and his panting was real bad when first diagnosed. Hug Sierra for me...my heart and prayers are with you. Edited to add: This is our little man his first day home from the hospital and he is wearing a fentanyl pain patch. Excuse his hair...he was so sick and could not be groomed or bathed at this time. stlgrey
They only mentioned that she would be treated with anti fungal drugs. I had no idea that she might require surgery. I hope we don't have to go this route. She might have to have more x-rays to see if its in her lungs and chest. We have to wait and see what the specialist says tomorrow. She only started to sound weezy last night. The vet who saw her this morning didn't seemed to be to be alarmed at her breathing when he listened to her chest. I hope the swelling in her jaw and face has gone down. They gave her a shot of prednisone at the vet's office today. Maybe we caught it early enough. Apparently this is found in the state of MO in our soil. How wonderful. Edited September 23, 2008 by stlgrey

They first thought Pneumonia...then after the CT of his chest...they thought lung cancer. Please let us know how your baby girl is doing when you pick her up...and please send a note out to Dr. Couto...he helped us A LOT with Cody Angelo. Also...it is very possible that Sierra is not as advanced as our little Cody Bear was. Quote Patti-Mommy of Lady Sophia 7-28-92 - 8-3-04... LaceyLaine 8-2-94-12-5-07... stlgrey
I have been looking at online pharmacies for the Itraconazole 10 mg. It seems its only available in 100 mg capsules. The Merck manual had a protocol on a website that suggest Itraconazole 10 mg or Ketoconazole 10 mg. BID. Did Cody Bear take this medication? patricia
Yes he did...The doctors in ICU got it for us but I don't know from where. It is possible that they stocked it...I know that he did not come home with it as we were waiting on all of his pathology reports from the fluid and tissue samples that they took...They gave it to us when he went back for a re-check. Ruth
You are right that it is in the soil. It is a fungal infection caused by migatory bird droppings. I am grew up in Michigan and went to Tennessee every summer when I was little, both states are right in the flight path of the birds. I didn't know dogs could have it but I have it. I have it in one lung. Mine is in remission at this time. Ruth

Guest CyndiW
I didn't know that dogs could get it but my brother had it when we were kids. He almost didn't make it. They said he got it from playing at a friend's house who had lots of chickens but I have also heard you can get it from the soil. My brother recovered fully and now he is a marathon runner so apparently he didn't have any permanent damage. Sure hope Sierra recovers fully as well. Sending lots of hugs and prayers. stlgrey
UPDATE: They didn't see anything signs of the disease in her blood or on x-rays. It seems that we probably got an early diagnosis on this problem. She was started on the Itraconazole medication tonight. Its pretty expensive to purchase, but I am looking into options and several resources that were provided. I know were not out of the woods yet, and this will have highs and lows. I feel better at least that she has begun treatment and hopefully she will start to feel better soon. Thank you all for your support and prayers.
