Good News! :-D We are back from the vet and it appears we have a hematoma. They did an aspiration, full of blood with some white blood cells, so Rythum is on antibiotics. Slight concern that the blood did not clot very well, so we need to keep an eye on it in case it gets bigger. (Poor clotting is another disease, not as serious as hemophiliacs, but something known with some GH's that I did not know about!)

More than likely, our graceful (toungue in cheek) Rythum hurt herself during one of our last big storms. As soon as I can figure out how to post photos, I will. But for now, I am very thankful our girl is ok.

Thank you Thank you for all your prayers and happy thoughts... My guy found this website while searching, so I am thankful we found a community forum to read, research, cry, laugh & enjoy about our hounds.

:cheers I am sure it is 5 o'clock somewhere.

LOL... I thought it didn't post!

That is wonderful news! And as far as the double posting goes...I would rather read 2 posts about good news over one post about bad news so keep posting the good stuff! :)

Update... the lump seems to be going down :yay , but I have never seen Rythum sleep all day... She has barely moved since yesterday - 3 doses of Cephalixin thus far. The vet said it may make her sleepy, but she isn't even moving to her soft cushy bed? :dunno

She has not slept well prior, so she may just be exhausted... Am I worried about nothing?

Some meds will make them sleepy, maybe it's a pretty high dose? Mine have always had it following surgeries and such, so they were already groggy from the procedure and needed to heal so I'm not really sure on that one.

Thx Trevdog - in the last hour she has perked up. Not like normal, but enough to get up when Daylight wanted a treat. She has gone outside, and wandered around the house, and searched for snuggles with both of us. She will probably go back to sleep as the new dose kicks in. Size of lump is back down to what is was when I first posted (went up to the size of 1/2 orange on 9/10). No panting & shaking... such a relief. This is the first "medical drama" we have had since we lost our Bridge Boy Aladdin.

Well the lump really hasn't decreased in size. It went down at first, but now appears to be a little bigger, but still smaller then last week. She is also still panting when stands..etc. and is still sleeping most of the time. But she is eating and drinking......Rythum has been taking her meds since Thursday with no problems. Vet mentioned that if bump doesn't go down by tomorrow, to bring her back in. So we are monitoring it and will keep everyone posted.

Well Rythum goes to the vet tomorrow afternoon....The lump has not decreased in size and she is panting when she is resting...so we are worried, but hopefully tomorrow they will be able to take care of the lump. We will keep everybody posted.

I hate to scare you but our Cullen had a lump like that. It seemed to bubble up out of nowhere and was not movable. It was retroperitoneal hemangiosarcoma. The vets took an xray in the office -- which I recommend you ask for if they don't suggest one -- and saw a large mass on the interior of the abdominal wall. They told us to get to an ultrasound immediately. We did and had an aspiration done. The report said possible hematoma, probable soft tissue sarcoma.

We removed the tumor and send it to pathology. It was the hemangiosarcoma. We waited too long before discovering the thing; he didn't make it. (It was only 3 weeks between seeing the tumore and the surgery.) Panting a lot was Cullen's main symptom for a couple of months prior to us seeing the lump. The thing was growing inside but we couldn't see it until it got too big to not show.

I dearly hope it's a hematoma or if if it's not, that you caught it while it's stage 1. You can do something with stage ones; you really can't with stage 3.

Sorry to be such a downer but being proactive with this is very important.

Marcia ~ So when we went to the vet, they pulled a volume of blood from the lump... it showed some white blood count, but he felt it was a hemotoma based on the aspiration. Was this similar to yours ? we will be exploring all options tomorrow, so if anyone has nore insight to this,... let me know. Rythum was not doing the heavy panting prior to the bump *(unless it was a monsoon storm... ) the panting has now recently increased even when she is 'resting"

Just now reading this post - saying prayers for your girl. Our 12yo Apollo had a slow growing lump on his chest near the sternum and we had it aspirated two weeks ago - it was diagnosed as a fatty tumor. I hope that you get a good report at the vet today - we will keep Rythum in our thoughs and prayers.

I take it back; I can't send email to you so here's what our process was, including pathology reports.

1. X-ray was done immediately at the local vets; it showed a mass that appeared to be attached to the kidney or to the abdominal wall near the kidney.

2. Local vet didn't want to aspirate as it was too close to kidney and suggested doing it at the specialists with ultrasound guidance.

3. Specialist vet did a fine needle aspiration which was non-diagnostic. "The aspirate revealed primarily red blood cells and does not seem consistent with an abscess" according to the specialist vet. The mass was 4.48 cm. Hoping for a hematoma.

4. Did a CT scan and a few true cut biopies. That came back consistent with hematoma too! The initial path report said it looked like a hematoma and no neoplasia was seen. It also said it could be a retroperitoneal hemangiosarcoma, which is very uncommon.

5. Bump got larger in a week or two and the tumor was removed. It came back as a Grade 3 retroperitoneal hemangiosarcoma -- basically, a lost cause. We had Cullen 3 more wonderful weeks. He was pretty good until his last 3 days. It's fast-moving.

May Rythum's bump really be a hematoma, but as you can see, it's VERY hard to know for sure until you take the thing off.
