Guest clousehounds
My heart hound Kyra took a bad fall on the deck in the icy snow slush this last weekend and careened into the grill. She came up fine, but was limping the next day. The day after she was limping and crying getting up or lying down. It was the weekend, nothing was swollen, so --assuming a soft tissue injury--I gave her a jump dose of Metacam and bided time until the vet opened today. (She was retired after hitting inside wall hard several times so I am watchful of this shoulder but have never had any issues....). Today the X-ray and exam confirmed a small chip off the shoulder blade and into the joint. We are doing a hepatic profile to watch for issues, running Metacam for 7 days and re x-raying then. Any thoughts or experience with this? If it continues to be painful I can opt for immediate surgery here (smaller clinic--will have to open up the joint) or I can go to U Madison for an arthroscopic procedure, but will have to wait longer to get in. Ideas? Experience? Anyone have anything helpful on this?
Trudy
Sounds painful If you have to do surgery, I'd go for the scope option... less recovery time and should be an easier recovery as well. See if you can schedule the surgery on Wednesday and if you don't need it, you can cancel it - but it would get you in that much sooner. Guest LindsaySF
Ouchies! I have no experience with this particular injury, but if it were my dog I would go to a specialist or someone with experience in this type of surgery. And the arthroscopic procedure sounds less invasive.
Burpdog
I agree--go with the lesser invansive procedure. I'd get into the university or another specialist for a consult asap. Quote Diane & The Senior Gang Burpdog Biscuits

Batmom
I'd go to the U. Shouldn't take you too long to get in? Guest clousehounds
Well its official. I am equidistant from U of MN and U of W and the soonest EITHER can do it is the 9th. I can get the open her up invasive surgery (which would not be super invasive since its small and right near the skin) this week. I have a tough decision. Do I let her be in pain until the 9th, drive her to Madison and leave her overnight to get the less invasive arthroscopic procedure. Its like 10 days more of pain, 10 days more of damage while the chip is in there, but less invasive and easier recovery. OR do I do the harsher surgery, but its 10 days less of damage and pain???? The price difference is 1500 vs 2100--so not really worth a thought...its more of which is better in the long run? Any thoughts??? This is my heart dog. I get ill hearing her cry. HopeForHounds
She could very well be feeling better by the time the surgery date rolls around. So, while I always like to go less invasive when possible 10 days of pain is a lot to put her through. I'd go with sooner. Batmom
If it's right near the skin and they don't have to go digging for it, I'd have it done sooner, too. Burpdog
which would not be super invasive since its small and right near the skin) As long as the vet is familar with greyhounds, I'd go ahead. My only concern would be closing the site, but it shouldn't be too big as you say it is small.
