Guest dwolfe711
Our 12yo Duncan was diagnosed with osteo below his right front shoulder about three months ago. We opted not to amputate due to his age and arthritis in his rearend - we are on a pain control and nonprescription meds regimen including Artemisinin, Pycnogenol, and vitamins. He is eating Evo and we are trying to stay away from all carbs in treats, etc. For pain control we started him out on Deramaxx when he was limping and first diagnosed - after a month or so he started limping again and so we decided to switch him to Previcox. He has been doing much better on that but about a week ago he started limping again so we increased him by 1/4 tablet a day which has helped some but not completely. I talked to the vet today about trying Tramadol - she has never used it but other vets in her practice have. We are taking him in tonight for a current weight (I think he has definitely lost some although we are giving him more food and he is eating it all). Then she will write us a prescription for Tramadol based on his weight. Has anyone here used Tramadol and if so what dose was prescribed for your pup? Weight to dose ratio? Our vet seems to be a bit leary of using it (not sure why as they are pretty progressive with most treatments) and was concerned about overdosing since he is a greyhound. Any direction on this from someone who has used it would be greatly appreciated. I would assume we will get the prescription tonight and get it filled tomorrow and start giving it to him this weekend if he is still limping on the Previcox. I still have not accepted the fact that Duncan may not be with us much longer - but I know that day is coming and the day we have to let him go will be a very sad day for us. Keep our omega boy in your prayers - we sure hope he gets to make that long-awaited trip to "Tucky" in July! Donna
Burpdog
Tramadol combined with metacam (I don't like previcox -- don't like any of them but if you must) will work as well as tramadol with morphine and neurontin. With Ivey I started with 50mg twice a day and kept increasing as needed. By the time she went to the bridge she was getting 100mg every 4 hours. Had I know about the combination of tramadol and morphine and neurontin, I would have tried that. romansperson
Idol started off getting 50mg of Tramadol twice a day with 300mg of Zubrin once a day and gabapentin 100mg 3-4 times a day. He was about 73 lbs. But you know what helped the most with his pain? Dexamethasone 0.5mg, either twice or three times a day. We didn't know for awhile that Idol's problem was osteo - it didn't show up on the initial x-rays. The specialist we took him to thought he might have a disk problem in his neck and changed us to the steroid (the Tramadol and gabapentin can be given at the same time too). It helped the most. My BIL also had a bullmastiff with bone cancer in her upper left leg and she was maintained on prednisone for quite awhile before the cancer spread. NancyB
My good boy Marvin was on Metacam when first diagnosed with osteo. When he needed more pain medication (before his amputation) he was given Tramadol (while still using Metacam). He was 84 pounds then and his dose of Tramadol was 1 and 1/2 tablets every 12 hours as needed for pain. Each tablet is 50 MG. Sending many prayers for Duncan Quote Nancy with Rocket, Umeko and Sasha Missing Albi, Kassie, Ramm, Ruby, my good boy Marvin and Mickey (BT) NANCY B'S COLLARS
Burpdog
I forgot that Ivey was also on pred (you cannot use pred with a NSAID). You can use a NSAID and tramadol. Guest MorganKonaAlex
For Alex, we had to use a combination to control his pain. - 100 mg Neurotin x 1 day - 75 mg Rimadyl x 2 day - 50 mg Tramadol. Can increase up to 100 mg. 4 x day. First increase the number of doses per day.
Gr8NCGreys
My Jilli is still limping pretty good so we are upping to 2 Tramadol 2 times a day with 1/2 deramaxx 1 time a day and going to look into either neurontin or morphine next. She is 64# Edited June 22, 2007 by Gr8NCGreys
Guest HHDesigns
Mr. Threat did fantastic on a combo of 75 mg Rimadyl twice a day and the Tramadol. He started out minimum dosage on Tramadol and we slowly increased it as needed. I think he was maxed out at 100 mg 3-4 times a day at the end. It was a great combination for him and he had no side effects at all.
iluvgreys
For my greys with OS we used either Rimadyl or Deramaxx in the a.m. with 50 mg. of Tramadol, then more Tram q 4 to 6 hours, up to 100 mg. doses towards the end. It didn't stop the limping, but did seem to help with pain when laying down. If you're a Costco member, it's very reasonably priced there through the pharmacy. dmswartzfager
Frazzle (78#) is on 75mg twice daily of just Tramadol. We were combining it with different NSAID's and trying to find one that worked for him, but we weren't having any luck, so we stopped the NSAID to let his tummy feel better and firm his stools, and he's been fine without an NSAID for about two weeks now. He's been almost obnoxious with how well he feels - woofing for attention and pouncing stuffies while I try to sleep in. Silly boy. With Tyler's bone tumor, we used a combination of Tramadol and metacam, but I no longer remember the doses. He wasn't on it very long before we chose to let him go, but he was comfortable, and more comfortable than he was on just the Tramadol alone.
