Tracey
What is it? 1601554[/snapback] I was wondering the same thing. My vet Dr. Effron used to be the vet at Plainfield years ago, so he would probably be interested in joining, as long as I can explain to him what it is he's joining. Burpdog
What is it? A group of veterinarians They can consult via email and they are putting together a board (or maybe it's already together). Perhaps Dr. Bill can explain it in detail. feemandvm
The group is made up of vets who see a lot of Greyhounds so we can stay up to date on the latest research and treatment modalities. We've had discussions on bleeding problems in Greyhounds, TBD titers, corns, anesthesia, whatever topics people have questions on at the time. I found one suggestion on corns VERY helpful where one vet actually "hulled" them out using a dental tool. The procedure was painless and only took about 5 minutes with no anesthesia and the dog seemed to show some pretty quick improvement. That technique isn't found in ANY textbook or any article... although I'm trying to talk the vet into publishing it!!! : ) Anyway... that is what it is about. Eventually there will be a website available for vets with a message board on which to post on www.ghrin.org but it isn't up and running yet. That may come later this year or early 2006. feemandvm
OH I guess I should add the group is currently communicating via email and meets annually (at least so far) at the North American Veterinary Conference. plepkowski
This is a great idea! If you need a quick and easy way to communicate you are welcome to subscribe and post to the list serve mail list that Ellen Schneiderman and I own, The Greeyhound Rescue List. It is a low volume list read by most of the primary people in the adoption groups. You join by sending an e-mail to LISTSERV@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM In the message area type SUBSCRIBE GHRESCUE-L <YOUR NAME> All messages will then be echoed to the e-mail address you sent the subscribe message from. This is normally a moderated list, but if you send me an e-mail message telling me the name under which you subscribed I will set any DVM subscriber to a no moderation status which will provide you with instant distribution of your messages. Apple provides this list server to adoption charities at no cost. They may provide you with a separate list if you find that the Rescue List works well for you. Additionally, Jeff, the webmaster here at Greytalk, might be able to provide you with either a forum on this board, or maybe your own private board for little or no cost. You can PM him through this board. Guest greytgal1
Dr. Bill, Dr Brad Fenwick, from the Kansas State University and the #1 guru of treating/diagnosing racing greyhounds recently started a website that I believe all of vets would benefit tremendously from. Have you heard about it? The Greyhound Health Research and Information Network. You have to sign up but you'll get a password right away. It's mainly for people in the racing industry and veternarians - We had that bad outbreak of the canine influenza all across the country and this website enabled people to keep in touch from track to track about details from the disease. Please include this valuable information as part of your program! www.ghrin.org Thank you Edited August 15, 2005 by greytgal1
feemandvm
Right now that site is mostly regarding active racing problems (quarantines, etc.)... but it's origin actually stemmed from the veterinarians for retired racing greyhounds meeting in Jan. at the North American Veterinary Conference. As the site gets up and running it will include a public library on Greyhound health issues and a veterinary message board. Those are the improvements I am looking forward to. I've registered already and an email was sent to everyone in the vets for retired racing greyhounds group the first day that it opened. It's already a good site but give it time and it will be greyt! : ) Quote Bill Lady Bella and Sky at the bridge "Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened." -Anabele France
Guest Cindy_Messmore
Hi Dr. Bill, I had an appt for Jersey with Dr. Mark Yacapraro ( Wooster Animal Clinic) this morning. Mentioned this post to him. He asked that I forward the information to his email address, which I have. I'm hoping he will take advantage of your group. He's been great with my 3 Greys, and he's always willing to listen to me when I bring info from the board. Thanks for your dedication to the Retired Greyhounds. Guest lizmego
GPA has a booth this weekend at the Central Veterinary Conference in Kansas City. I'll type up a nice blurb about this email list and hand it out to vets at this conference. Does that sound like a good idea? or is this list only for vets that regularly see greyhounds? My thought was if someone visits a vet that isn't too familiar with greyhounds that this email list could be really helpful to them. We're also handing out the blood levels (with authorization from Dr. Stack) information as well!
